Hi everyone. I've been lucky to not have a serious exacerbation in the 4 yrs since I've been diagnosed. 2 minor head colds.....
I guess my time has come...Scratchy throat Friday morning turned into what feels sounds like acute bronchitis yesterday.
I went to the Urgent Care facility that is managed by the same group as my pulmo. When I went in around Noon yesterday I wasn't coughing much and didn't have a fever. The young, male nurse practitioner wasn't very friendly or helpful. He said, well it's viral and antiobiotics won't help. He asked if I had many COPD exacerbations and I said no, but I wanted to nip this in the bud before it bacame serious. He then said, well, this stuff will probably go to your lungs so here's a script for Z-pack if you need it.
Coughed so hard in the night my hiatal hernia (I think) was acting up and I had severe chestpains with heart burn...was finally able to sleep.
This morning I have a temp of 100.3. My mucous is still clear but mostly I have a deep barky cough that really hurts in my bronchial area. I hate to go to ER but just might end up doing that....
This disease is scary....Do the drs every give just Prednisone without antibiotics?

I am so sorry you are sick. Yes, this disease is scay because you never know!!
The z pack may take a bit tos start working, but if you have fever, you might consider the ER, because you do not want it to go to pneumonia!! Be sure to tell them about the z-pack.
Just speaking for myself, my doctor has prescribed prednisone without an antibiotic if there is an indication my lungs were inflamed from so much coughing from allergies, for instance.
You can take a dose each day for 5 days without tapering off
(like 20 mg day for 5 days) but if you get to 7 days you need to taper off so as not to do damage to the adrenal glands.
I hope you feel better soon! Please keep us informed, fever at our age is nothing to ignore!!

take care of yourself and keep taking that z pack!!! (you may need more than one round even)
I take 10mg of prednisone every day. I tried going off but my lungs wouldn't let me.
