I HAD to quit opening my windows a couple of years ago because of the dust & pollens are so bad where i live & I switched from a swamp cooler to A/c.
I do like those swiffer dust clothes on wood where I can't just use a damp cloth.
I would love to have new furniture and hardwood floors, but my feet get cold so i'd just end up putting rugs down. I swear my house manufactures it's own dust when i'm not looking!
and darn if that dust still finds its way inside!
i have a tip= i do throw my bed pillows in a hot dryer when i change my bed, kills dust mites (ugly lil critters when shown magnified !!! :)
we can't do all those things, but there are some good tips there so thank you for the link :)
This all came from a short article about a sleep study I read in Scientific American (April 2015) that caused me to start looking for additional facts elsewhere best I hadnt gone there. They placed people in Clean Room gear and in a sealed room put them to bed, then measured the dust or pollutants.
1) Movement. If one rolls around they kick-up significantly more dust especially dust mites. Lie perfectly still.
2) Heavy blankets help to stifle dust, but they also make a person warmer the warmer bedding and blankets are the more chemicals emitted. Sleep cold.
3) If you sleep with a blanket over your head (complete or partial) increases the amount of inhaled pollutants by 20 times. (Perhaps one of those cones they put on dogs?)
4) If you sleep on your side or belly you inhale more pollutants than those who sleep on their back.
5) Mattresses (foam or fabric) emit gaseous pollutants VOCs (volatile organic compounds) -plastic, and flame retardant chemicals. The newer the mattress the higher the concentration of VOCs. [Crib mattresses were worse in VOCs than adult.) Keep old mattresses. Wrap in plastic.
6) Better ventilation, washing sheets and vacuuming mattresses improved air quality but had to be done weekly to be significant.
Sleep tight kids.
Brand new packaged bedding sets with a fitted sheet, top sheet, and pill cases have 40x more VOCs and fine lint dust than older washed sets. New bed spreads and blankets were even worse. Always wash these items or hang outside to fully ventilate before use.
Living in the modern world is NOT for the truly paranoid.
