COPD is a progressive disease characterized by airflow obstruction or limitation. Emphysema is characterized by loss of elasticity of the lung tissue, destruction of structures supporting the alveoli and of capillaries feeding the alveoli. Both have symptoms that include shortness of breath, among other respiratory troubles. If you are a COPD or Emphysema sufferer, join...
If your oxygen saturation falls below 90% you need supplemental oxygen to exercise. You definitely should exercise. Just use supplemental oxygen if you need it to keep your saturation in the safe zone.
Quitting smoking and regular exercise are two of the most important things you can do.
For many of us with COPD shortness of breath indicates low oxygen saturation. However, there are people with copd who get short of breath, but their oxygen saturation is fine. So, just because you are SOB does not mean you O2 saturation is low.
It is definitely a catch 22 and a BUMMER ! Just gotta keep plugging away.

Bit different here re-exercise. I can get thru around 20 mins at walking pace on treadmill for example and oxygen hovers between 95-97 yet I can end up SOB and need to sit n purse lip breathe for 5mins or so to recover.
So for some of us the difficulty is exhaling the carbon dioxide more than not getting enough oxygen...so I wonder if there is any real damage being done by working thru SOB?
