COPD & Emphysema Support Group
COPD is a progressive disease characterized by airflow obstruction or limitation. Emphysema is characterized by loss of elasticity of the lung tissue, destruction of structures supporting the alveoli and of capillaries feeding the alveoli. Both have symptoms that include shortness of breath, among other respiratory troubles. If you are a COPD or Emphysema sufferer, join...
Shortness of breath is not necessarily correlated with oxygen saturation levels. As I recall there are members of this forum who have copd who get short of breath, yet their oxygen saturation readings are good.
There are causes of shortness of breath other than copd, such as heart problems. Also, being significantly overweight can cause shortness of breath.
that is why the oximeter's all have 02 AND pulse readings (or should)---it's a balancing act to get the right amount of 02 while keeping your pulse in proper "range" so your heart doesn't have to work overtime & go into heart failure.
last year my pulse started going high (just sitting around). after almost 4 years on the same amount of 02 i had to up mine.
the heart and lungs are a "team"...and it's normal when active we breath harder & the heart pumps harder to move that 02 around....now with copd the lungs arent doing their part of the "team" action so the heart has to take up the slack.
as boldrint brought up shortness of breath is a whole nother and seperater issue, but i didn't see you complaining of that....sounds like you are doing pretty good so far, have you had a PFT or is that for the pulm to do?
when you're sitting around what is your heart rate/pulse & 02 levels?
pursed lip breathing is not something you do "hard"
pursed lip breathing you;
1.breath in thru the nose to the count of 2
2. breath out thru "pursed lips" to the count of 4
this is to get rid of the excess air that we don't usually blow out

that link shows the breathing techniques, but it is also the COPD foundation & if you click on different links it has a world of information there specifically about this dx
