It is important you get the gook out of your lungs because it could lead to infection and possibly hospital stay.
You might try mucinex, that is used to thin out the phlegm and make it easier to cough up.
If you are having hard, choking almost coughing fits, and nothing is coming up, please tell your doctor.
Altho we do not need to completely stop our cough with cough medicine, because we need to cough to get the gook up and out, there is a cough med I have used with doctors approval called Robitussin Peak, that has a little dexamethorphin to calm your cough, and guifennesin (mucinex) to thin the mucus. I would take a dose of that , like every 4-6 hours, and once every 8 hours add a n extra mucinex 600mg tablet.
Hope you find something to help, but try to cough the gook up out of your lungs, that is important.
