(ANSA) - Turin, September 24 - An Italian team of doctors has successfully experimented for the first time in the world a method of lung dialysis to help treat Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which has been ranked at the globe's third-leading cause of death. The method was tested at Turin's Molinette hospital and Bologna's Sant'Orsola hospital. Lung dialysis is a low-invasive system that purifies the patient's blood by reducing carbon dioxide levels. Tests suggest it can reduce mortality rates among COPD suffers from 35% to 7%.

Thanks for the information. It is wonderful the man in Pittsburg was able to be treated, and he lived and was strong enough to get a transplant. But If he can use it, why do the rest of us have to wait 5 or more years just for a study group. The FDA is to darn slow on these things. Where other countries are gung ho and inventing and researching, and doing something, the FDA is doing what...???Nothing !! heck if it (any study) works in another country for a yea5r or so, why would it not work here?

The article raises a lot of questions. It would seem someone would have to stay hooked on this device unlike blood dialysis for a kidney failure where someone does it every couple of days.

tell me if i'm wrong, this mainly is a ventilator (just safer?) to keep the man alive until he could get a transplant?
so i assume even when approved; this type would be used for those approved & awaiting a transplant?

not something most of us still at home would be using>unless we are C02 retainers, then maybe there will come a point that like kidney dialisis a COPD person could go in for treatments?

does this mean that if it is done regulalry like kidney dialisis that it would decrease mortality rate to 7%?

also, does this mean i have only a 35% chance of dying from COPD & 65% that something else will take me out before my COPD?
---curious there because that may be some comforting news to someone recently diagnosed with COPD (or even those of us that have been dealing with this for years---i guess i've just "assumed" that once told i had this dx i was going to die of it, and never looked at the actual mortality rate)

this is a reply to jarca and the question of the 35% mortality rate. i am 63 years old and am at what THEY call stage 4. i have been on oxygen, 24/7 for the last two years. my lung doctor told me that i am more likely to die from something other than copd,emphysema. so....i got THAT going for me ! HA!

I noticed it came from Toronto, Canada, so there is hope here.
