Common Variable Immunodeficiency Support Group

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.

My immunologist's office just called with my blood work. I am a little concerned. My IgG has dropped for the first time since starting infusions. It went from 939 to 815. I asked the nurse if this could be why I am getting more infections recently (I have been on antibiotics 5 or 6 times this year). She said it was not unusual to have a drop. I have asked for the doctor to call me. Anyone have any ideas as to why the drop occurs?

Hey Stacey,
Have you had to take steroids recently? I think they can cause IgG to drop. Otherwise, I'm not sure. I've only had mine checked once since I started treatment and it was 913. I wouldn't be surprised if mine has dropped too. I've been getting more boils and thrush lately. I'll be interested to see what you find out. I hope you are feeling better!

If your fighting infection they can drop because your body is using them up more. Additionally, its not uncommon for them to go down a bit like yours did. Perhaps you can discuss an increase in dose with your doc? Or if you are not there already, switching to an every 3 week vs 4 week schedule?

Thanks to both of you. Kelli that was my thought. I do subQ so I was going to ask the doctor if a increase in dose would be suggested. I do not take any oral steroids, Ashlee, only nasal and inhaler. I wonder if that can effect levels also?

Hi Stacey, I do SubQ and had my dose increased at the end of December. My doctor's back up plan was to split my dose after that. That might be an option for you to if you are already at your high dose. - Zen
