That sounds so fun and exciting for you! I hope you can get enough information to help you figure out what you are going to do.

I traveled to Russia a few years back and they have universal health care. While traveling, one of our group was sick the whole trip (3 weeks). She ended up with an emergency and we found out that in Russia, their health care covers everyone, regardless of citizenship. I've traveled to several countries over the years, never personally needing to seek medical care while out of the country so I don't have that experience. I find that the state department is very helpful or learning things about the country and how it pertains to US citizens. They are also helpful in knowing how to take things with you and be prepared for going to that country.

What an adventure!
I purchased insurance for catastrophic needs. For we leave to U.K. in four weeks. It was told to me that they cover emergency only. The services not the supplies. I have to pay for any items used. I am taking a set up to access my port if needed. I will only be gone three weeks but if something were to happen I will need to flush the port at four weeks. Say if we were to get stranded or something.
On line I learned from the web site for immigration to U.K. what is needed for travel ect. so that might be another thing to search for.

Hey chick - So the people I know who infuse out of country are on subq and get their meds shipped from the US. I don't "think" we can receive the IG from other countries due to them having exposures to germs we haven't...ok that wasn't my technical answer and I'm not super versed in this but I think that is how I heard it. Can you switch to subq while you are there? Or, I'm guessing you can get your IVIG shipped there to you as well you would just have to find an infusion clinic/doc office/etc. There are also additional concerns regarding vaccinations. I really don't know the answer to your question because I've never been out of the USA, but it seems like these other ladies have done a great job. :) I just wanted to say congratulations on the offer! I know you'll be great at what you do wherever you are and I'll be praying that there will be a way that you can accept this job without compromising your health. Way to go, Glider!

I've traveled some in third world countries and healthcare is definitely an issue for regular travelers, let alone those that have a chronic disease. Where there is no adequate health care available, the answer is flying to the nearest country that has healthcare that meets world-standards. In dire emergencies look for a charity or mission hospital or clinic run by a developed country. Just walk in and ask for help. Most will treat westerners.

In my first aid kit I had syringes and emergency drugs I might need in addition to my meds, bandages, pepto, etc. I couldn't trust syringes and other disposables in countries where they swear by the sterility, but most likely supplies are being rinsed out with cold well water and shoved back in the plastic..

Do as much research as you can. Locate a hospital that meets world standards near where you will be. There may be none. If there will be western-trained doctors in the hospital where you are working, they may be willing to infuse you, but the hospital may not have the support systems necessary if things go wrong. List everything that could go wrong, how fast you'd need treatment, and have a Plan B.

Yes - travel health insurance is a must! Especially the evacuation coverage.
