i know that celiac disease is a type of autoimmune disorder so it is different than CVID, however I do know that a lot of us have major stomach issues. I've been seeing a GI specialist for years for IBS and that some stomach issues are related to CVID. i would check the IDF website...i think it talks about it on there?

Here is what the primary immune deficiency website says about it...

Some patients with CVID report gastrointestinal complaints such as abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss. Careful evaluation of the digestive organs may reveal malabsorption of fat and certain sugars. If a small sample (biopsy) of the bowel mucosa is obtained, characteristic changes may be seen. These changes are helpful in diagnosing the problem and treating it. In some patients with digestive problems, a small parasite called Giardia lamblia has been identified in the biopsies and in the stool samples. Eradication of these parasites by medication may eliminate the gastrointestinal symptoms.

CVID can cause celiac disease. However have u had a blood test for it...b/c i too had all the symptoms as well for celica and they did blood work to check it came back positive for it then they did a biospy of my stomach and it came back negative. Biospy are the most accuate. Blood test can come back false postive or negative. Now for me I have been diagnosed w/behcets disease very rare disease. Celiac symptoms can have a lot of same sytmpoms of other autoimmune disease. Good luck and make sure they biospy your.stomach.to b very sure.

O.k., well I have been diagnosed with CVIDS since 1995, and really HAVE NOT had any problems. Now 5 years ago I had a gastric bypass and was told (DONT WANT TO GROSS ANYONE OUT) that I would have what is called "dumping syndrome" which is where if you eat high sugar/fats you will have diarrhea. Well I have been having chronic diarrhea for the last 2 years so I went back to my gastric-bypass surgeon and he said NO WAY gastric bypass causes this, so I had a colonoscopy and and upper GI and all was fine. So now I am wondering about gluten intolerance and have started completely eliminating all gluten (on 3rd day) I googled info about celiac's and gluten intolerance and they mentioned something about IGa's cant figure out if they said if you have none (which my body produces nil) or if in response to gluten your body overproduces Iga. But thanks, I will check the IDF website, because my doctor is CLUELESS about this disorder. Thx

Celiac is an autoimmune disorder and autoimmune diseases are very very common in CVID. I don't have it, but I know a couple people through the IDF that do. Sarah's right, a biopsy is most accurate. Luckily, eating gluten free can be really easy! Good luck! I have some gluten-free resources if you want them.

O.k. thats good to know, (well not good exactly) but I can assume that it is related to CVIDS then, I am testing out this gluten free diet and going to wait 2 weeks to see what I come up with. I am sick of doctors! Hahahaha, Only go when things are intolerable. As long as I get my infusions things are pretty tolerable. But thanks for all the feedback, Stimpy

Stimpy, forgive me for chiming in here and disagreeing with your doctor but I know at least four people who have had gastric bypass surgery and every single one of them has diarrhea, especially if they eat fats or a lot of carbohydrates. If you want to talk to any of them, let me know.

There are a lot of people who are sensitive to wheat gluten and react to it without being officially intolerant. I am gluten sensitive--it triggers asthma and gut issues in me. I also have a problem now with dairy. I am not sure if that is CVID or just because my body is crummy but alot of us have problems with wheat.

I've had IBS for a long time (even going back into childhood), but worsening about 13 years ago and now just kinda...well...touchy. Some days good, some days spent in the bathroom.

My son has Celiac--I'm gluten intolerant. Whatever you decide--if you are going to get tested for Celiac do NOT go on a gluten free diet. If you do, you're test results will be inaccurate. If after you test you are not Celiac, then you could eliminate it for short period of time. Trigger foods for IBS do include gluten (mostly wheat and spelt). Be warned...if you go off gluten just to 'see' don't do it for more than a month--or you will have a great deal of trouble going back. Good luck!

Oh, and BTW my MIL had gastric bypass and has dumping syndrome and sometimes vomiting. In fact, they had her go to a support class for two months with other that had the surgery to learn about it before deciding to have the surgery. She knew it was a risk. Not sure which cloud your doc is living on...but most of the people there had that issue.

Sorry...just realized the 'cloud' comment came off sounding harsher than I meant. Just meant...don't know where he's been as all these folks suffer from those side effects. I apologize if I sounded grumpy, I'm not...just shocked! LOL.

Hi, just a quick note to say that for me, going gluten-free made a huge difference...I did this out of desperation years ago, and it stopped the abdominal pain. I have some great recipes, or check out the "Gluten Free Goddess" blog, she does fabulous gluten free (and a lot of allergan-free) recipes!

stimpy- you said you had an endoscopy and a colonoscopy did they do any biopsies? I know you said that they said everything looked good. Sometimes when things look good they will still do a biopsy. If they did one in your upper endoscopy- they probably did check for celaic disease. Have you asked the doc that did the endoscopy? Or the ordering doctor. Celaic isn't rare there are a lot of people out there with it or at least a gluten intolerance. There is a difference between Celaic and gluten intolerance. So you may have the intolerance and not celaic or the other way around. Good luck to you and keep us update. If you doctor's don't know anything about celaic then maybe you need to find a new GI doctor.

Tina and TealOrca: Yeah, I am kinda with you guys, My brains tell me it has something to do with the gastric bypass, but like I said when I saw my doctor, he said NO WAY, had to be something else, polyps, thats why he did colonoscopy, upper GI, the only thing the gastro doctor said was the reason people have BAD NOXIOUS GAS (sorry, dont want to gross anyone out) was because it is bacteria. And Oh my God, you wouldnt believe how bad I have it. I am up all night having diarrhea. I have taken to wearing an adult diaper to bed, because when I get up in the morning I cannot make it to the bathroom on time. All I can do is laugh about it because I feel like I will go insane! I mean this happens EVERY morning! But it is getting REAL OLD AND PATHETIC! Ah, the depravity of it all! I get confused because I am supposed to eat only certain foods and diet, but I get extreme FATIGUE, so I eat more, then I guess that is wrong so I get diarrhea, and if I exercise, sometimes it works and sometimes it scares me so much how my body feels (like Im gonna die) which I think is from the CVIDS. So Im not complaining, just trying to figure things out, to perhaps get a little bit better quality of sleep. THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR INPUT, It is like a puzzle that I am always analyzing. And yes TealOrca the Dr. that did my surgery is an ARROGANT ASSH#LE, seriously, he is ALWAYS trying to UPSELL plastic surgery to his patients. He wont even talk to me. stimpy i believe when docs pull their head out of the sand they will find MANY patients after gastirc by pass have problems.....

just one of many that i know now has iron def and has to do iron infusions.....in addititon to many other heath issues....personally not sure if there are more prob post surgery than pre....she has stomach issues all the time...and her immune system seems to be crashing....
just one story of many i am sure...but not sure they should write off the surgery...did you have cvid before the gas by pass?????

I suffer with IBS thats what lead the GI to test me for CVID because I was getting sicker and sicker with the crohns treatments, I was taking 2 shots of humaria a month and as we all know it kills your IGG. I went through complete bowel work up and I deal with nothing but liquid stools all the time I have not had a normal BM in yerars. I had the celiac biopsy with it being negitive. I followed a glutin free diet for awhile with no change. Thank goodness I love bread so My hemo seems to think that I will start to show some change in the next 2 to 3 months since I have only recieved 4 infusions.
