Common Variable Immunodeficiency Support Group

Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) is a group of 20-30 primary immunodeficiencies (PIDs) which have a common set of symptoms but with different underlying causes. CVID's underlying causes are different, but the result of these are that the body doesn't produce sufficient antibodies in response to exposure to pathogens.

We are looking at moving to Silicon Valley and the health plan would be Blue Shield PPO. Does anyone have experience with them? The plan looks fantastic on paper but we all know that can be misleading. Also, does anyone in that area have a doctor recommendation?

Hi Marilyn,

I am on Blue Shield of California PPO through Covered California. For the most part they have been pretty good and had no issues with getting subq infusions rolling once the plan kicked in. There are 2 different plans, regular BS of CA and Covered CA, BS of CA, some of my doctors have declined to participate at this time, which forced me to begin a relationship with a new doctor. Luckily, my Immunologist and Hemotologist/Oncologist signed up for Covered CA. In many ways, the insurance is the same.

I live in Los Angeles so unfortunately, do not have any physician recommendations.

Silicon Valley is a great area, lots of wineries in N. Cal. May have to do a road trip and meet you for wine tasting.

I live in CA and am ashamed to say I have NO idea where the Silicon Valley is LOL if its near San Fran there is a good immuno that several people I know go to see. If it is close I can get his name for you. My other recommendation would be to contact the Immune Deficiency Foundation and get a list of doctors in that area. They will only give docs who are experienced in treating PIDD, not just general docs. Good luck!

Thanks both of you. I will be doing more research as I can not find any IgG treatment on the Specialty Pharmacy formulary list so I am trying to get in touch with someone in the benefits department and hope they can call someone to find out what's going on.

Hi live in CA, but not near Silicon Valley. You aren't far from Stanford or SF though so I am sure ther are some fantastic doctors to chose from. Good luck..
