Coming Out Support Group
This community is dedicated to the challenges that gay men and lesbian women face, both between the partners in a relationship and from other influences (family, society, etc.). Find support and talk to others who may be facing the same challenges, and share your experience.
In a general sense without knowing anything about your situation. I am going to have to make a lot of assumptions that may be way off, but I am going to assume you are in the USA, that you are not currently in a romantic relationship or have a potential person in mind, and that no one around you is aware of your situation. I am also going to assume you are somewhere between say the ages of 18-45ish age range. These could be completely wrong :P but its a staring point. So firstly in this situation I would say first, know that you have lots of time. Coming out is inviting the world in, or at least part of it, to very intimate areas (from a conversation i had earlier i felt i should try to change my normal analogy). If it wasn't then it wouldn't be a thing to anyone and there would be no worry about acceptance right? So if you are wanting to come out and are worried then you might put some feelers out. Needless to say in the USA there is no shortage of headlines dealing with LGBTQ matters. You might be able to get an idea of how accepting people are going to be by using that to your advantage. if it comes up or can go that way talk to them about it. So for instance, some sports person being gay and you and friends are into sports and it comes up, someone makes a remark you might spur conversation on it. maybe inquire, why does it matter that they are? Maybe ask them why they would be fore or against it or even if they are. In the end you know these people to some degree and deep down might have some idea of how they will handle it. Sometimes we can know deep down they will probably be okay with it but our heads get in the way. But this is a way to get an idea. In the USA as a whole, being Gay, Bi, Lesbian has become far more widely acceptable than it once was. In some areas things are substantially more difficult than others, i am just talking over all in the USA. So if you were on the higher end of the age spectrum you have experiences of seeing how things were say in the 80s when it was a hush hush subject and conversion therapy was all the rage. Where as if you were on the lower end of that age range I gave, that isn't really a thing because it is more in the open now than it once was. So that may also play a part. Do know however in the USA, most places do have some legal protections for things such as employment and such. So try to find out what is and isn't protected in your case because knowledge is a wonderful defense against fear. Lastly, know you aren't alone. I believe that you would have a very hard time finding a place where there wasn't at least one person who was going through this as well or has. The demographic you would need would be very small. So being that you are not alone, means that there are those who will understand and will accept you. There are those out there who will be completely fine with who you are. So if you happen to be in a place where it is on the side of not accepting, you can always work towards surrounding yourself with those who are. The internet is amazing for being able to find groups and things for that.
Hopefully some of this was useful, again I had to make a great deal of assumptions and such in order to give you something that you may or may not be able to use. If you have more specific questions i am sure you should be able to get some help or there may be others here with the same troubles. Again welcome and Sorry it took so long for you to get a response.
