Colon Cancer Support Group
Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from mushroom-like growths that are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy.
You should not expect 'Any' pain! You may turn wrong and fell some, but the pain medicine will usually take care of that.
I do not think you will be concerned about your own gown. (I really believe they prefer hospital gowns for infection sake, that you may bring from home)
They now really tie your gown so your backside does not show! (something you should have no worries about)
I worried about getting out of bed too, but believe me they have ways of getting you up without pain or very much. Just follow their instructions and you will be fine.
If you have a total open insicion the staples or sutures may pull some? (I hope you can have it done laproscopy too, but in some cases they just can't.
I started on a light pop-sickle diet and jello, but for only a day. I was complaining of being so hungry, my doctor let me have a light breakfast and that went well so I was given a full meal. (but they may keep you on lighter foods longer?)
I think you are worrying about things you are not going to care at all about after the surgery.
Just let them take care of you as they do know what they are doing.
All the best of luck to you and you will be in my thoughts Tuesday.

The day after surgery here came my nurse and one aide. (the nurse was so young and so good looking)
They said they were getting me up! OK I knew this had to be done. I got set up and put my arms around 'Chads' neck and he gently pulled me right up. We pulled and pushed a lot of machines but we took a walk down the hall. At first they were holding me then let go to see how I would do. I am a fast walker and they had to tell me to slow down.
Then that afternoon in came 3 ladies and said they were going to get me up? I said I had already been gotten up but they seemed not to believe me? One of them had a walker and I said I do not want that which seemed to perturb her? She carried it with her all the way down the hall. (All 3 ladies telling me to slow down)
Finally I was disconnected to machines hard to push down the hall and only the IV pole.
That night in came more ladies telling me they were going to get me up! Again with a walker which I said I would not use. So in one day I had 3 different groups getting me up!
Next day bright and early and I had already been down the hall. They said they were to get me up? Yes by this time I am finding this amusing. Chad came in and told them I had been gotten up 2 days ago. Still nothing would do them but get me up again. (It was in their orders?) They always had that darn walker?
Believe me if needed I have nothing against walkers when needed. I fell last winter and fractured my pelvis and I was so happy to have a walker.
I thought that story may amuse you some?
If anything like that happens to you, just go with the flow. I sure did not argue because I knew I needed to walk anyway.

How long before you could get around at home? This will sound crazy but I have tickets to a show on November 11th that I've been looking forward to for five months. My surgeon said if things go as expected I should be able to go, but I'm having trouble picturing being up and around by then. A stupid thing to be thinking about, huh?
I woke up in recovery feeling quite comfortable only thing was I had a hard time trying to see. I didn't know they put drops in ur eyes before surgery it felt like I had glue on them haha.
I was nauscious for a few days but that being the worst of my experience and that wasn"t even that bad. You won"t be aloud to eat for a few days I believe but you probabaly won"t feel like it anyway.
The pain meds they give you keep you comfortable while you are there.
You will have ur IV for a few days so they can give you meds.
I have to say getting up was soooo hard for me but because I also had a hysterectomy and my gallbladder removed as well. One HUGE surgery so you can"t go by me on that.
All in all I had a pleasant experience if that"s even the right word haha but It was not bad at all. You should be fine! Please try not to worry once I got to the hospital, I felt alot better. The nursing staff does a great job and making you relax a little.
I wish you an uneventful surgery and hospital stay and wish for you a speedy recovery. Please give an update when you are feeling up to it.
I'll be thinking of you on tuesday No Worries Hugs Karen
My DIL was going to stay with me but did not? My unit is all on one floor so I could get around and I had a pillow I carried with me or sat on my leg side. I made Hot Chocolate and cooked. Well mostly microwaved. I was suppose to have home health change the dressing on my rear everyday. She only called me and asked me if I could get a neighbor? I had just downsized my living condition and could see myself going to a neighbor (I did not know) and ask them to chance that dressing. No way I got a mirror and did it myself. I was driving in 5 days although I was not suppose to! I did not ever drive far, only about 2 blocks to a little store.
I tried a little excercise daily. Of course I took it easy on myself.
Things have changed so much throughout the years
Yes Karen the eye drops? They use them to keep them from drying out. (sounds like they dried yours out?)
I have what they call a cast iron stomach and hardly ever got sick until this cancer and it was so bad at times.
Karen I had a hysterectomy about 30 years ago and it was a total different experience. They did not even get me up for 5 or so days. (it was much harder on me and I even passed out) They have improved things so much!
I remember a normal delivery and they kept you in bed 3 days and 5 or 6 with a c-section.
Now they rush the new Mom out usually the same day or the next and have them up just a couple of hours after delivery?
It is all for the best, to prevent clots and getting the body moving really helps.
TWO pretty good stories for you Rhoni. You will do fine like Karen says.
Can't wait to hear your story. :)

- most of my pain was in my back right after surgery. Had a laproscopy and apparently they put air in so as to separate the organs better? I guess the air gets trapped after you are sewn up and takes a bit to disperse.
- wear 2 hospital gowns, one backward and one forward. Covers all!
Best of luck to you and remember I'm a phone call away if you need me!!!! No Worries Big Hug Karen
