Severe constipation problems since colon resection

My surgeon's office didn't answer because his secretary was waiting for my surgeon to call her back. I wish she had told me that instead of not answering. I just talked to my surgeon only to find out that all of this time I haven't been taking enough metamucil! I was taking a teaspoon or a scoop(according to the package directions) instead of the two tablespoons in the morning and evening that he wanted me to take. He also said add colace 100mg twice a day if metamucil doesn't work. He said all of my pain and bloating is most likely due to constipation. He also said that my stool softener could cause bloating so colace would be better. I didn't think I was constipated because I have been having small bowel movements several times a day some days and none at all other days. I still don't know what's normal for me. I really hope the metamucil and colace(if needed) help! I thought since I was having small bowel movements I was fine.

Wish someone would explain what's normal. My surgeon recommended 'Inner health Plus' and a daily dose of Prune Juice. I've found pure 'black cherry juice' more pleasant. Definately a change in my eating habits has helped. Write down what you eat in a week and discuss that with your Doc. Every little bit helps.

Everything I eat causes me gas, bloating, pain and cramping. Foods, I used to have no problems with now cause problems. I'm not eating anything differently than I've been eating.

I take Peri-colace, one in the morning and one before bedtime and seems to have pretty good luck with it alone.

I'm wondering if it ever goes back to normal (whatever that is)
I had most of my descending and sigmoid colon removed 2 years ago ..I had stage 3b . still clear after 6 months tx
..I take 3 tsp metamucil 2x a day ..it helps half of the time ..The rest of the time I have diarrhea and have to take olestyr which helps ..
No matter what I eat I get gassy and bloated LOLOl
low fibre /high fibre doesn't seem to matter ...I don't think there is a normal .... keep trying Darkness E

I've been just using lax-a-day which is like miralax. I haven't used it for a few days because my bowels seem to be working better. I will use it again if I become constipated again. I get gassy and bloated no matter what I eat. Lax-a-day and metamucil make it even worse which is why I don't like to take them unless necessary.
