Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from mushroom-like growths that are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy.

So over 5 years past the first colon cancer - 6 inch tumor with left colon resection, a 2-inch tumor will be removed along with the right section of my husband's colon on Friday. Prelim biopsy showed benign, but we are on edge that the pathology will show cancer. Always a fear....

I'm wondering if anyone else out there has resections on both sides of the colon? Docs say that they should be able to use the center section to reconnect to the rectum, but it's slightly questionable. Is the second surgery much worse than the first?

I'm so nervous and want to be supportive. If it's cancer again, I've read that statistically it's not so good. If it does return, then are chemo or radiation worthwhile? I've read mixed reports.

Anyone else with colon tumors have problems with subsequent bile duct or pancreatic duct disease/inflammation?

I hate cancer but hope for strength for those who fight the fight.

Surgery was done through laparoscopy and surgeon only removed about 6-inches of his colon with only the lymph nodes that were attached to the section. Pathology took 5 days, and tumor was benign!!! Yay! He was out of the hospital in 4 days, grumpy and not feeling too well but hopefully on the road to better health. The double resection has left him with about a foot of "unhealthy" colon left. The doc says that his colon is unhealthy due to years of prescription narcotic use for chronic lower back pain. So now we'll breath for awhile I guess.

I had two large cancerous tumors removed from my colon all at the same surgery -- stage three advanced.

I think cancer is something we are forced to take one careful step at a time and work for the very best outcome.

I'm glad the second surgery and outcome went so well.
