eating fresh foods

I haven't had a salad or a strawberry for 7 months, yikes, I'm going crazy, they are my favorite foods. Because my white count was almost always low, Dr said no to fresh foods my entire time in chemo. Now that I'm two weeks done, I called her, she said she wouldn't ok f.f. until she sees me on the 23rd of this month. I get blood work prior to the visit. Does this sound right to you guys, seems to me a long time to wait for f.f.'s, I'm so anxious.

Well, better to be cautious. But, I started dipping in toward the end of chemo and excelerated about 2 weeks afterward.
Had a lovely beet, green salad today... can't wait to hear about your first encounters with real food again! : )

I think your doctor is being overly cautious but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I ate salads throughout my chemo as it's possible to get most fresh veggies totally "disinfected." Berries are one of the few things I was told to avoid. Every doctor is different, and the 23rd isn't that far away. Think of how much you will enjoy that first salad!!!

I had to do the same thing during and after my chemo - it's completely normal and very wise. I never got sick during that dreadful time. There's a lot of bacteria in ff's that our weakened bodies can't fight off during chemo. I know it's hard, but stick with it - for your health! You really don't want to get sick and go backwards in your recovery. Trust me, once you're allowed - it's heaven to have a salad again! It's been over a year since my last chemo treatment and I eat more ff's than ever before and the wait was worth it.

I was thinking of you, GG, when I was eating lunch yesterday. I had a roasted veggie "stacker" - cold roasted peppers and zucchini with some kind of cheese in between. Today I am having sliced Jersey tomatoes (you can always peel them) with a slice of fresh mozzarella in the middle. I'm no a fan of mushy cooked veggies but this stuff is good and safe!
