Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from mushroom-like growths that are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy.
I have suffered coccydynia related to my Feb 8, 2011 colonoscopy.
I went for my annual colonoscopy related to the colon cancer of last year and within 24 hours couldn't get out of bed and walk. Called the gastro but since I didn't have bleeding or a temperature they said it was unrelated.
Experienced severe pain in my pelvis and tailbone that radiated down the backs of my thighs to above the back of my knees and across my butt. Went to the chiropractor. Got a month's worth of adjustments but still in such severe pain I went to emergency. Xrays and digital exam showed nothing.
Went to my Primary. Got pain meds but nothing touches the pain. Aleve gets me through the night and day but I end up having to take acetaminephen in large doses just to get to sleep. Laying down is worse and getting up first thing in the AM and sitting for long periods of time and walking on uneven ground, etc, etc.
Went to my oncologist who ordered MRIs and thank God ruled out further cancer (coccyx pain can also be a symptom of further cancer).
Now I am off to try Physical Therapy. I'll keep you posted. I'm just barely keeping up with my job and activites. I am in desperate need of relief so I can get back to my more active lifestyle like walking and gardening, etc.
I did some searches on the internet and did find that this syndrome is rarely a result of colonoscopies, but it does apparently happen. At least now I know what it is. Anyone else experience this?

After a period of a couple of days the pain subsided and I thought no more of it. Then a couple of years later I started to develop severe pain around the tail bone and like you it radiated down the back of my legs. Funny thing was it hurt if I walked but lessened when I ran.
I went and seen a doctor and he believed that with the fall I had injured the muscles around the base of my spine and that now they were trying to compensate as one side was a bit weaker than the other and this was pushing against the spine.
He gave me a course of high level muscle relaxants and nearly straight away the pain vanished. Since then I have not had any pain and the way the doc explained it the relaxants were enough to allow muscles on either side of the spine to balance so they were holding the spine with equal force.
