Colorectal cancer, also called colon cancer or bowel cancer, includes cancerous growths in the colon, rectum and appendix. Many colorectal cancers are thought to arise from mushroom-like growths that are usually benign, but some may develop into cancer over time. The majority of the time, the diagnosis of localized colon cancer is through colonoscopy.

Hello everyone, I'm a 22 year old female about to schedule a colonoscopy. I've had some incredibly frightening symptoms for the past year and a half and I'm fearing the worst.
In October of 2009 I had diarrhea and noticed blood in the toilet. In June 2010 I noticed blood when I used the bathroom. Both times I went to the doctor and they said it was most likely an anal fissure of some sort. Around June I also had a fecal occult blood test. It came back fine...no blood in my stools. I went almost 6 months without having any noticeable blood in my stools or any bowel movements that were out of the ordinary (except for occasional diarrhea which i chalked up to be an anxiety symptom).

About a week ago I noticed small traces of bright red blood on my stools again and this time it was with small amounts of clear or white-ish clear mucus on the stool and toilet paper. This has been going on for a days, there are only small amounts of blood and mucus...but still, they are there.

I don't know what to do and I'm so worried =(.

You need to schedule that colonoscopy asap. Your symptoms are the same as mine were. I was 37 years old at the time. my doctor kept telling me that I was too young to worry about cancer. I have stage 4 cancer because they wouldnt test me. So get test at least for your own peace of mind.

You would not be the first person on here to have colon cancer that young, so please do schedule that colonoscopy

Let us know when your colonoscopy is scheduled. Be pro active and demand one asap, And breate deep in and out and let God take your worries. It is His job. I will be praying!

Absolutely get a colonoscopy, but don't freak out. It is more likely to be from something like IBS. But you need a colonoscopy to determine what it is.

Courtney, it could be a number of things, and you won't know until you get the tests done. Breathe and do the legwork to clear it all up. We'll be here with you along the way. Let us know when your first test is scheduled. I'll keep you in my prayers.

hello courtney it pains me to see another person who is facing a battle.. but like everyone said it doesnt really mean its the big C word so dont freak out unless you have to and even then dont because you have more of a say than u think you do.. i was diagnosed 8 years ago im 23 now almost 24 they gave me 6 months 8 years ago now they have no clue do yu know why... because im not ready to go yet keep a stiff upper lip an remember cancer isnt a death sentence anymore .... more of an inconvience ....if you want to speak to someone your own age just msg me an i will help with your fears i been helping everyone here and they have been helping me but i know u just sometimes need someone ur own age :)

Thanks for the replies, everyone! My colonoscopy is scheduled for this Saturday morning at 8 a.m. My prep day is tomorrow. I almost feel bad posting my worries on here because I don't even have a diagnosis of anything yet..I've been worrying myself sick the past few days though. I keep playing over and over in my head what I'll say to the doctor if he gives me bad news.

I just want everything to be over with. I want the colonoscopy prep to be done. I want the actual colonoscopy itself to be done. And I want whatever news they'll give me (hopefully good...) to be done.

Have you had a prep before Courtney? Horrible tasting stuff, but gives you a good cleanout. Don't be too worried about the actual colonoscopy. I find them relaxing. They make me cozy on pillows and put me half to sleep, then I wake to a nice cuppa and bikkies. Then the Doctor comes in and tells me 'all clear'. :}

First time he came in and told me they did find a mass and would send it to pathology for biopsy. I hope they come and have a word with you after too and give an indication of what they find. Don't worry if you have cancer or not, we'll be here to support you. Need to talk to someone, jump online if you can yeah. There's always someone around. I'll keep a lookout for you when I'm on. Your in my prayers. :}

Just wanted to let everyone know I had my colonoscopy today and everything came back fine and clear (no polyps or masses found and no biopsies needed) and the diagnosis was internal hemorrhoids (which would probably got irritated when I'd have bouts of constipation and/or diarrhea).
I'm happy I was proactive and had it checked out though instead of ignoring it. The colonoscopy prep and the procedure itself were very tolerable (for those of you reading who may be wary of having one, believe me, if I can make it through one with no problem then you can too) =).
My prayers go out to each and every one of you, you all have an incredible amount of strength and you're all a help to those seeking advice on this board.
