The requirement is that you are all working toward the same goal, that statement may seem obvious, but if there are 5 of you in a group and 3 of you want to do problem A and 2 want to do problem B, the group direction is already doomed. If there were 2 problems, then all 5 of you should agree to do problem A first and problem B second (or vice versa), that way your direction is clear.
Share responsibility. Again, based on a group of 5, if you have a problem to solve, insist that each of you take 15-20 minutes ALONE to attempt the problem and then come back as a group to discuss it. Make sure that everyone in the group takes a turn to explain their answer WITHOUT INTERFERENCE from the other members of the group. Then, at the end, discuss as a group where you believe the true answer lies and agree on a common strategy for solving the problem. Then go away again and write out the solution ALONE so that each member of the group fully understands it in their own style and you are all on the same page. Also, any marker will see an individual solution to a group problem...
Chatting about trivial things is ok. If it is a large group (over 6 i would class as large), break the people down into smaller groups of 3-6 (which i find is the best number), even if you are all doing the same problem, then come back at the end to discuss as a large group, with a representative from each sub-group having their say. Allow yourself 15 minutes break every 45 minutes of work (that is a common concentration threshold).
Finally, there will always be people in the group at different levels of ability. do not push people away, everyone should feel like they have something to contribute, if there is a pushy girl/boy who thinks they are better, let them have their say, but do not let them upset anyone else, and do not let them influence you if you feel your opinion is not being heard. Likewise, if there is someone who does nothing, give them a warning to pull their weight, or they may be excluded from the group. Although harsh, setting up these ground rules BEFORE any group is operational will let everyone in the group know where they stand!!
Good luck and if you need anything, just shout. Peace
Thank you again :)
