I went to my first local CODA meeting last night. It was not the traditional meeting, this CODA group is working together in the 12 steps & traditions workbook and on Step 5. "Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs." It certainly hit home for me - I know I am able to trust my higher power (God) but hard time trusting "human beings"with my most intimate thoughts and issues. I was able to share that with the group, so that was good-baby steps! I definitely have some work to do. I plan to return next week - they will continue to work on Step 5 for another week. Thanks for listening!
hope you don't see this twice - not letting me post
DeJa, the Big Book is clear that Step 5 is to be done with God/HP, ourselves, and one other person. Not a group format except for discussion. We can pick anyone who knows the 12 step program; many have used a minister or priest. Counsellors and therapists don't count as that one other person. This group may not be the best fit for you. Usually step study groups are separate from regular meetings. Actually, have never heard of any 12 step program having new members jump into a step study group. Groups begin with step 1, and those who miss the first meeting have to wait for a new step study group to form. Just my experience and what works. Fixing what ain't broke is not usually a good plan. Hugs.
Good to see you again Deja. Glad You could
post on here this time around.
I agree Regular discussion Meetings at Coda
or Alanon would Probably be more helpful To
you than a step five meeting CODA meeting.
I am a big believer in alanon for addiction in
Relationships. There is so much to those
Types of Relationships. The addict and the
codependent. My ex might Have been dry
it was still an alcoholic marriage regardless.
I Have gone to a few Alanon step meetings
And i could jump in but it was very slow going.
Mostly I go to alanon discussion meetings and i
Also did start Attending an ACOA meeting.
My alanon home group we do one quick step
once a month. Its really just reading The step
and picking one question and going around
The table. Some are not that far Along in their
recovery. They answer the best they Can, they
try to pick an easy question.
To me the steps 1,2 and 3 need to get done
At some point in the beginning so you can move
truly Forward in your recovery. It takes a while to
be willing to hand Over your self will and accept
your own powerlessness.
That took me two years Of going to meetings and
Chair time. I did everything under The sun to save
my marriage and try to fix us, It did not work. Plus i
had a loads of self work To do and getting humble.
There is no rush in recovery, it unfolds and it can
Be very slow going. Mine has been six years so
Far and i will not graduate. Its like the peeling of
an Onion, layer by layer, Hugs
Thanks SimpsonOK
I was thinking the same thing. I guess the issue I have about meeting is I live in a small beach community.. and not many to choose from. Even the Alanon meeting was only 5 ppl. But, I do agree, it seemed odd to me and they said they didnt feel comfortable finding sponsors so they decided to do this study together.. 4 regular ppl and 2 guest. Guess I'm so desperate at this point.. not good huh?
Wow, they are calling themselves a 12 step group, but have changed everything that makes it a 12 step group. What an example of active addiction. You might look for an online meeting. Me, I would let HQ know in case they bothered registering. If they didn't, they will be notified to stop calling it CODA. If they did, HQ will send someone or likely two or three fairly local folks to help straighten things out there. Talk about the blind leading the blind. Hugs.
CODA might offer some online meetings
Not sure who else.
I am not a fan of online meetings at '
Least not the ones i tried on MIP alanon.
It was like Watching grass grow. I tried
it 20+ Times and never liked it once.
Other groups might have a bettter
Interactive way of doing it. This was
All the greets and thank you's from
Whoever was on then plus all the
typing and the waiting.
They did use to have someone on there
To talk to at night i did use that feature
