Why is it that I know what I have to do as far as breaking up the negative thoughts and "choosing" to change my mood etc, etc but sometimes I become defiant and do the "wrong" thing anyway, As if to teach myself a lesson.
Who am I kidding? Anyone else experience this dichotomy? Good consciouse vs bad consciouse.
Any suggestions or advice? Please help...

eckhart tolle is an excellent philosopher on the ego.
just remember sometimes to do the opposite of what the ego wants. there is definitely a duality within all of us.
once we can get the ego in check it still offers its opinion but no longer insists on having its way!

Everybody wrestles inside ourselves with the negative and possitive thoughts.
What I find fascinating is that people like you (S68) are trying to do right and therefore wrestles with the negative.
Some one long ago pointed out to me that people that do evil wicked things have to wrestle with the possitive thoughts coming from their egos. They even have to defy their own eyes and ears like when hurting a child then they see and hear what they are doing.
Like you do wrong when you do not want to and thus you have virtue.
They do right when they do not want to and thus they are hypocrites.
Some of my most powerful moments for improvements has been after I did wrong and hated the wrong that I did so much that I will decide never ever to do such a thing ever again. Recognition is a powerful motivator.
Especially after I fail based on some fear or shame that I have.
To be too afraid or too ashamed to do what we know is right is too much to live with after we become aware of it. Recognition is powerful.
In my younger codependent years and I was filled with fear and shame then I acted accordingly because that was all I had.
Now that I know better then I demand better of myself and that is why I fight the negative elements of my ego.
The fact that you do know it, and you do recognize it in yourself, is a possitive testimony in itself.
Just keep it up because the fight is not over till its over.
