I am at the stage where I am learning to set boundaries effectively, and this applies to almost everyone I come in contact with, which is surreal if you think about it.
It has taken me 37 years to harvest and practice these unhealthy patterns (like not setting boundaries) so I am patient and I know that it will take some time for setting boundaries to become instinct. But, I do have faith it will come.
I have so many questions about your specific situation, but what I will say, and what I'm realizing is that even though you may set boundaries with those around you, that doesn't mean that they will respect them. That's happening with me, so I know I will have to re-evaluate who I surround myself with soon. This is an act of self-love, not of vengeance or carelessness but one that will only be in my best interest.
I hope that helps.
