Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. Assertiveness training? Self-esteem coaching? Or even something like acting classes... volunteering... finding interests (hobbies) that involve other people... Things that are "hands on" are good -- at a certain point you have to get out there and get your feet wet. Good luck! I used to be very socially awkward and was that way for DECADES. (There wasn't Internet back then, and I was always too poor for therapy...) At age 52 I'm only now just starting to feel comfortable in my own skin. Still, I'm not complaining -- I'm thrilled to be here now because I can remember what it was like. What really helped was finding out who I really was, and then socializing/interacting from THAT place (as opposed to donning a mask to fit in). Anyway, all I want to say is there is hope, you can definitely do things that make you feel more comfortable in social situations, so go for it!
One of the hardest things about codependency is that we often feel like everyone around us is watching us, judging us, and reacting to what we've said or done.
The reality is that people generally don't even notice and/or don't care about others' awkward moments. Try to keep in mind that you are your own worst critic.
In my understanding, the key to "beating" codependent patterns is recognizing that the only opinion that counts is your own opinion. When you are less concerned about your actions and less judgmental of yourself, you will feel more comfortable being who you are. When you feel more comfortable being who you are, you will be less awkward.
good luck finding your way.
Do you have any "proof" that you are socially awkward? If so, maybe the company you are trying to keep isn't your type...
Think of the lunch table back in high school... If you aren't accepted by the "Popular" crowd, maybe you should try with the Geeks...
Ever consider that you may be on the spectrum?
Is that beer on your avatar? Could that be playing into it?
Just trying to help... Hope I didn't offend.
BTW- I find that I can be that way, too. But I choose to think it's more about them, and not me. Think of the old Groucho Marx quote! : )
