Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. If you are on a journey towards self-love, this support group is for you. Join us and find others...
Your upbringing was horrible. We all need to be honest with ourselves about that, but there comes a time when just accepting it and using it as a catalyst for change is more important that making sure everyone knows how bad it was to excuse your own behavior. I'm not saying your doing this but I spent more years blaming my parents for how badly they messed me up instead of working on myself.
We all have past stories to tell that are full of hurt, abuse, mistreatment and disappointment. That's really a pretty good assumption, but honestly all that matters is what steps your willing to take to make things better for yourself and your self esteem.
You've taken the first steps.... good for you! Now what?
I am glad to hear that you are a part of a support group and go to meetings, that is a great step forward, it is so easy to isolate when we are struggling and it is so important NOT to isolate.
I think we always tend to take things like unemployment and busy friends as meaning more than they do when we have a codependent mind-set. Yes, those things suck and they make life hard and less enjoyable, but as code's we do tend to believe that we are less worthy as people if we are unemployed or if our friends are MIA but that is not the case, that is the distorted thinking coming into play, they are the thinking patterns that we perfected while growing up in our messy families but those thinking patterns are not healthy.
Do you have some people from your meetings that you can call at times like this when you are struggling? Someone who has been in the program for a while and can give you some gentle reminders about keeping the distorted thinking at bay? Do you have some positive or rational stuff that you can read to help get your thinking back on track? Remember to use the tools from your meetings, whatever they might be. Call healthy people. Read healthy stuff. Take care and I hope you feel better soon.
I wish that your life would've been wonderful growing up! I am so sorry that you went through all that hell.
If I had been your mom, I would have told you " I LOVE YOU!" I would have kissed you and hugged you! And, your brothers, too. I would've spoiled you. I have two daughters that I spoiled. I am paying for it now though. lol
Well, I go to Al-Anon because I am extremely and painfully codependent. My poor brother is suffering from alcoholism.
