Codependency Support Group
Codependency is defined as someone who exhibits too much, and often inappropriate, caring for another person's struggles. A codependent person may try to change, or feel shame about their most private thoughts and feelings if they conflict with the other person's struggles. I will immediately apologize for anything I say related to alcohol and that it is in no way meant to be offensive to yourself or anyone that has a drinking problem. Bi-polar runs in my family. I spent most of my life cycling from depression to hypo-mania. Prescriptions did not work. The only thing that really helps me take the edge off sometimes is alcohol (wine). I dont overdo it, and only drink at home.
My addiction though is people. I have to get them to like me. This is in direct conflict with my belief that I am unlikable and have no friends. I will often fixate on someone and though I am not a stalker, will manipulate until they like me. I may entice them with my cooking (if its a guy), bake cookies/cupcakes, volunteer help, flirt, create situations that were preplanned; talk to someone that I know will blab it to the person, etc. I am aware of all of these things. I also know that my need for people comes from being abandoned as a child.
My goal is to integrate my inner children, continue on my spiritual quest and learn to be a friend who does not over-do it. I hope that in the future God will grant me a loving relationship with someone. I hope and I try to help other people. So this forum has been very beneficial.
I am so glad to see you here. As an acoa myself I can struggle terribly with feeling safe and sharing - I am still very new here. I am hoping those fears will leave me. I find this place a wonderful sanctuary. Wishing you all the best on your recovery journey.
