(I had an incident with a teacher many years ago where that teacher tried to get a group of teachers to attack us when we lodged a complaint against her for her calling our child bad names like idiot and jerk in the classroom. We went to the principle and a meeting with the teacher was set up and that teacher brought in all the teachers from that entire grade. We said we only wanted a meeting with that one teacher and the other teachers either looked embarrassed or started verbally attacking us. What I found was, teaching as a profession is often strange and things are tolerated that would never be tolerated in another work environment. I found out beforehand that other parents had complained of the same thing, other scapegoats in the class had been moved to different teachers. I fought this all the way up to the superintendent who was respectful and quite shocked at how the teachers had acted. As far as I know, nothing happened to this teacher that year but she did stop calling our kid these bad names.)
Your last paragraph is a lesson I am learning right now also. We know this stuff but we so easily get sucked into craziness and abusive situations anyway. My situation was with people on social media and political falsehoods and then a 'new friend' who turned out to be a real problem over the same thing. I realized that my gut and mind told me to not participate or to get out when it first got crazy. Like you, I tolerated things with naive and wishful thinking. Please let me know how you are doing. Stay strong.
