Maybe he was trying to make you feel better about trying to drive if you were tempted to...???

If & when he drinks enough to start repeating himself & repeating stories that he's told me so many times before, I will tell him that he is repeating himself & getting difficult to talk to.
May seem like a reasonable thing to say, but I don't expect a reasonable response.
If/when he gives a nasty response, I will remove myself.
This will be a huge thing for me & something I have wanted to do for so long
I've been told many times this truth and it holds true. "when the pain of where you are exceeds the fear of where you want to go, you'll begin to take action." My biggest fear is fear of the unknown. The opposite of fear is faith. Today, I take action, do the next right thing and let God deal with the results. Works pretty well. :)
So I guess my point here is that I held my boundary and things got scary real fast. I had a right to do this, but when dealing with an alcoholic, you can never tell how they will respond. Be careful
