Cleft Lip / Palate Support Group
Cleft is a congenital deformity caused by a failure in facial development during gestation. It can be treated with surgery shortly after birth with highly successful results. Cleft occurs in somewhere between one in 600 and one in 800 births. Cleft occurs in several severities and is divided in two major categories: cleft lip and cleft palate.

I used to have a lot of mucus before my most recent surgery (a failed attempt to completely close the hool in the roof of my mouth). Now it's not so bad. Most of the time my nose is cleared up. My hole isn't completely closed, but it is very tiny. So build-up can happen sometimes, but once I blow my nose I feel better and I can breathe better too.

aww is it to do with the hole not being closed. the hole in my palate just got sown together so i duno why it is

In my case it was a matter of keeping my eustachian tubes clear so that the sinuses could drain. After years of being "clogged" I found an ENT who put me on a mucolytic, which isn't available anymore and closed a hole in my ear drum. After a few years things cleared up. Now, as soon as I feel plugged from allergies or a cold I take mucinex until the plugged up feeling goes away. I also discovered that I have no sinuses in my forehead and I wonder if that is common and why we plug up so easily. But I also think that keeping the eustachian tubes clear is vital! I suppose the mucinex also keeps the sinuses draining.

so you got prescribed stuff. i find it really difficult specially when working out and playing football. feels like one side doesnt drain aswell as the other. do you get like that areoplane feel when it feels like your sinuses are about to pop. i had a septoplasty from an ent guy but stil get clogged up

The Rx mucolytic is no longer available so I use Mucinex now. 12 hour extend tabs. I know exactly what you mean by the aeroplane feeling. I live at 3,000 feet which means I travel up and down a mountain. Before I got my eustachian tubes to clear it would drive me nuts for hours! It rarely bother me now, especially since having the hole in my ear drum fixed several years back. I had to take mucinex for years to get the mucous out. I don't know if I'm explaining it very well but the ears, tubes and sinuses are interrelated and if you can get the mucous out of there, I THINK it would help. It made all the difference for me. My septum has been fixed so many times there is no fix left! It doesn't really bother me any more and it didn't affect my ears and sinuses. Some docs will recommend psudafed to drain the sinuses but I have found that using mucinex drains things things well AND prevents excess mucous from building up, blocking the eustachian tubes and sinuses. (Because of our anatomy, our eustachian tubes are not positioned at enough of an angle to drain properly.) I don't need it much anymore but you might try it, especially when you are involved in activities where your head is changing positions in space. Hope my little rant, helps!
