New to this Group. I had a routine EGD done due to scope I had 3 years ago in which I was tested for Barrett's Esophagus which was negative.
Well Guess What was Found! Grade 1 esophagus varices. The first thing the doctor asked was do you drink and I said yes. After reading most everything I could find online the obvious truth is I have Cirrhosis. I guess the only thing now is to determine what Stage. I am scared to Death, but I know I brought all this on myself. Have been a drinker for 30 years. Never a really heavy drinker but consistent. Couple of glasses of wine at night or maybe a couple of beers. Only hard alcohol was the occasional Margarita.
Haven't had a drink since the Dr. told me about this which was about a week ago. I know I have to quit but it's going to be very hard. I have a very stressful life and alcohol was my stress relief. I have been reading a lot of your posts about how long you have been living with this disease which is encouraging. I have not had any other symptoms. No swelling, no weakness, no tiredness, no jaundice, nothing. I would not have know what is going on if I hadn't done the EGD. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise be cause I probably could have gone on drinking making everything worse and not knowing it. Thanks. Had to vent.

Lots of people are shocked when they learn the damage done by something they thought was harmless or even healthy, a great outdoor life in the sunshine can lead to cancer.
Point is, now you know and now you can make better choices. Get all the support you can. Just ceasing alcohol intake can turn things around.
Good attitude to suggest this may have been a blessing.
