Cirrhosis Support Group
Cirrhosis is a consequence of chronic liver disease, most commonly caused by alcoholism and hepatitis C. Ascites is the most common complication of cirrhosis and is associated with a poor quality of life, increased risk of infections, and a poor long term outcome. Liver damage from cirrhosis cannot be reversed, but treatment can stop or delay further progression and...
I'm afraid MELD would be impossible to estimate, but will be easy to calculate if you can get your blood test results.
The MELD score is probably more important as it shows how well the liver is functioning, as the biopsy is used mostly to determine the presence of cirrhosis and its cause. The cause will then dictate how best to treat.
Hope this is of some help,
I have a MELD score of 9 (down from 10 last year) and am very low on the transplant list at Cleveland Clinic BUT your MELD can change as your liver disease progresses or you become decompensated (have other major health issues as a result of your liver disease such as ascites or HE or pancreatitis, etc.) I believe they told me at CC that the average percentage of decompensation is about 5-7% per year. If you have had active HepC for a long while, you may have a higher rate of decompensation per year. One thing that helps for sure is that you do only things considered "healthy' where your liver is concerned from here on out whether you are placed on a transplant list or not. Even if your liver disease is not caused by alcohol, that doesn't mean you can drink even occasionlly. If the disease is considered "fatty liver" then a diet overhaul might be necessary to remain as "well functioning" as you are right now. This site is a wealth of information, comfort and support. Please keep us informed as to your results as you go along. I can't let an opportunity pass me by without saying that prayer is the biggest help. I don't know how I would have coped these past 8+ years without the benefit and comfort of The Good Lord. I hope this hellps.........Hugs prayers and Merry Christmas, CarolLentz
God Bless
Were/Are you an iron worker? Siderosis is deposits of iron pigment in a bodily tissue that can come from inhalation. So that's negative..Good.
You need blood work numbers to come up with your MELD score.
Sometimes you have to ask the Dr. to Rx blood work to get the MELD. Those would be the INR, Bilirubin and Creatinine. Then go to this webiste, enter the numbers and it will calculate for you the MELD score. www.mayoclinic.org/meld/mayomodel6.html - Informing yourself with knowledge of this disease will help you control it. Best Wishes. Peace, feather
