ok, i work at a lab 5- 5hr days, I would like to work 4-6 hr days, employee health wants my doc to say what my diagnosis is and why I want to change hrs, pain doc has no prob doing this, she said dont let them see your health records, I wouldnt. My question is, will they start asking a bunch of questions about what im taking etc? I dont really want them iin my bus, ya know? Should I just stay working 5 days( hopefully the change in meds will help) or do this? what is the law regarding working and taking narcotics? anyone know?
Your health is your business & that is why we have privacy protection.
Unless you've signed something stating you have to inform them of narcotic treatment or cannot take this type of medication on the job there should not be a problem.
My husbands work requested we hand over a list of medications each family member is prescribed for the new insurance. I was beyond stunned.
I said no way & they had no right to ask such a thing. Come to find out there were a lot of people peeved about this. That info could pass through a lot of hands & there is no protection there.
Your doctor should be able to inform you more about your rights but a letter should do it. Most wont go up against a doctor & she or he does not need to go into great detail.
Its worth a shot if it would make life easier on you.

As to drug testing...that's for illegal drugs. If you are taking something then you give the script to the lab when you give the sample. They are supposed to note that you are allowed to take it but are not supposed to report what it is to your employer.
HIPPA covers a lot of this. The doctor and lab are not allowed to give out this info without your permission. But whatever you do don't give any info to HR...they are not covered by HIPPA so the whole company will know your business.
