Its been used as everything from a topical antiseptic, to a narcotic substitute or enhancer, to a mild sedative and hypnotic. There is little evidence to support its use for any indication.
If you try it, you need to make sure and check all your other medications against it for cross-tolerance. Herbals that have narcotic, sedative and hypnotic effects can be dangerous if mixed with certain other strong medications.
