I'm in a hotel room watching "Man Vs. Wild"- this crazy British man who went swimming in the ice- jumping in one hole and swimming to next- 5 minutes in frozen water. He made me so happy when he said that he was so cold but at that rate of punishment to the body the cold was burning. It was a firelike freeze, then he described RSD to a T by saying the cold/heat pain was intensely painful and he had to act fast.
Maybe I'm just bored, but this is how I've described RSD for 15 years! And if HE felt it by abusing his body for a tv show, then it isn't so crazy that I feel it too, every day. It's on Animal Planet and they're watching him in thermal photography- it's NUTS! But I want to get my pic taken with those cameras, LOL! The foot and lower leg would be the color of ice cold but to ME it would FEEL like a combo of the red for heat, and the blue for cold.
I recall being diagnosed with RSD and having both my feet checked for temperature on these black "slates"? I had to allow them to take my foot temperature before I got the diagnosis, but at the time I had no pain b/c they'd given me a shot. I am TERRIFIED of doctors and especially, NEEDLES. I truly feel, at this point in history, there should be better ways to administer meds than by the barbaric needle. Sorry, JMO. But what I remember is, they took the plates off my feet or feet of the plates, (It WAS 15 years ago, LOL!) and the Phys Med Doc called in the Vascular surgeon and Ortho guy and had them look at the results.
I was in la la land b/c I had NO idea that a shot of medicine makes you a little...drunkish? I was not feeling much, but still yanked my foot back (a longtime habit now- getting the foot out of harm's way) when the Ortho thought he could TOUCH it. In fact it must've been horrific that day b/c for me to take a shot...let's just say I refused an IV with kidney stones more than once but they still give it to you b/c u need the hydration. :( That's why I never go in with stones any more.
I just thought that statement and the show really summed up a lot about RSD, so if you guys ever get a chance to see it, you'll hear another person talk about how being that cold makes it hot- a cold/hot pain that is ridiculous beyond words.
I was the freak with the bluish foot and (okay- I'm admitting to RSD's ugly side- the hair on my foot and the ugly strong, long, disgusting toenails. I still am that person, and I am having extra symptoms this week, just as I ready to leave for Cancun in a few hours to finish up a piece. I'm at the airport hotel, readying for bed and see this. I'm sitting here worrying about my calves b/c they (BOTH!) are intensely painful for NO reason. The muscles are spasming like crazy and they seem to want to freeze up in odd positions. Now, I have RSD in my left foot and leg, but why is my right leg doing this too?
Maybe I need to find a wildlife show to join? Or maybe I just need to get to Cancun and swim a bit, relax a bit, and not worry so much.
Sorry- I'm literally on my 4th day of insomnia with 2 hours a night being the average for the week. I feel like I've lost IQ points with that sleep!

i have one friend, who actually found the first RSD article for me, and will also take my pulse or feel my flaming area. it's really warmer and my pulse speeds. i just wanted someone to acknowledge it. nothing turns blue on me, but my tattoos swell up also. i know i'm not making it up, but he's the only one who doesn't roll his eyes and affirms what's going on.
Does it ever get cold and sweat? The sweating is one part that freaks me out. It doesn't always start when it hurts worse, but usually has something to do with the temp of my foot OR pain. It sweats like a cola can set out in a warm room. Little beads form, and if it's really bad it looks blue and slick, like it's wet all over.
And I try to shave the ugly hair that grows and cut the toenails, but I never get it right. I can usually tolerate a bit of pressure on my foot to shave the hair, but my toenails went from paper thin to rock hard with RSD. Sometimes I just leave them alone.
Isn't RSD fun? ;)
i've lost the article my friend found, but the first dr who documented it was a civil war era dr. it was in the NYer. he was the only person who believed me and found this article and said this is what you have!

It's a pretty exclusive club, RSD is. But I'd REALLY rather not belong. I'm sure you second that, Jen. But it is what it is. We just have to play the hand we've been dealt and try to make the most of it.
