Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

Remember me? I had the 7.5mm kidney stone stuck in my ureter on December 20? I waited until 2 weeks ago today to have a lithotripsy bc our area doesn't have a lithotripsy machine. Our hospitals share one so I waited 3 weeks for the procedure.
Well today I saw my Urologist & guess what? The stone is still there!!! I don't have any idea what to think or do. My kidney is swollen, I'm getting an ultrasound tomorrow & my doc is going on vacation. Meanwhile, the pain & irritated kidney just get worse.
How could they do a litho and MISS the target- especially one that big? I'm shaking- I'm so scared. The doc who did the litho said that the procedure went well. I wasted time & money & seriousl emotional time bc I'm terrified of needles & procedures. I wasted weeks worrying. And now my kidney could be compromised.
So now it's yet another waiting game. On top of all that, my urologist originally wanted to spend the appointment talking to me about Meduallary Spongey Kidney Disease, or something like that. She wants me to see a Renal doc after we take care of this stone. I have this disease and we need to treat it. But 1st, this stone.
I just don't know what to think or do. My foot is killing me bc of my RSD and the cold weather, I caught pink eye in both eyes from my son and now this. How can this happen? It's like going in to get your gallbladder removed but oops, it's still there!
I'm so tired of the pain. I try to be positive. This just feels like some elaborate joke. I've given a month to this stone. Now I have to do it again?

I invited Bill to have dinner with me last Sunday. He wasn't willing to drive 7 hours to mid Michigan and teased me with his beautiful ribs!!! So, of course I ate alone and had cedar salmonĀ

I'd also find a new doctor. And travel to an area with better treatment possibilities.
Look up healthgrades.com to check out those that you have already.
Sorry that this is happening. Seems too long to have a stone. Kidneys are pretty important.
I'm unsure if lithotripsy is a guaranteed procedure but it won't hurt to look into it. I just don't know why the doc performing it said it had gone well. I thought they watched it with ultrasound.
Live and learn, I guess. When my doc did one on me last year it was textbook. But they alternate- one doc does all lithotripsy procedures on one day a month at each location. I don't know what is going to happen but it's the waiting that scares me. I'm NOT good at waiting with medical issues.
It seems that the doc has some explaining to do. I'm sorry you have to go through all this with everything else that's going on. Hugs.
Take care.

Have you asked the doctor about how it is possible that the stone is still there???
I d get a second opinion.
She came in to meet me, told me she'd be careful of my RSD foot & that she had laryngitis. (We could tell.) She seemed hurried. I didn't see her again. Se did tell my hubby that it "went well".
Honestly, my best recollection is of the sheer terror I had and always have about IVs and how nicely they distracted me on one side and put the IV in on the other. Then the kind anesthesiologist, knowing i'd had a kidney stone stuck for weeks, asked if I'd like something for pain.
I'd already told him everything about my pain doc, given him the number, etc. I remember asking if that was okay- that yes, it hurt but I could hold out for another 15 minutes. He ordered pain meds w/o me realizing he was giving me meds right then - I mean it was ASAP ready! And I suddenly blurted, "My IV is burning!" (I have a needle/IV fear.)
My hubby told me they'd put meds in and I remember feeling the pain go away for the 1st time since the ER. I was also SHOCKED that I felt the med b/c I didn't feel it at all in the ER. Dry mouth, dizzy, and of course, worried, I (according to hubby) asked the doctor if he remembered that I'd taken my morphine pill that morning. I was already freaking.
This is another reason I'm scared of the surgeries. I have a phobia of needles and IVs, etc. And even though I've had surgeries in my 17 years of RSD, I ALWAYS worry that my foot will be bumped or touched, or that they'll miscalculate, I'll get air in my IV- anything that sounds ridiculous to a sane person is a fear of mine during a procedure.
The anesthesiologist was funny, and very kind. The doc who did the surgery, I didn't interact with much. But I DO wonder what HER reply would've been today.
My 2nd opinion comes tomorrow after the Ultrasound. My Doc doesn't want me exposed to more radiation, considering how much cancer there's been in my family, including my mother passing away in 2003.
For now I am trying SO hard to be positive, but I have the same questions. HOW could they miss the stone??
Thanks everybody- I feel so alone right now since 99% of my friends and family are healthy. No one understands the pain.
And I've already told my husband that if I don't make it, he should call a lawyer ASAP. He's already pissed that we are paying for the surgery that did NOTHING. Also, the doc today said that the report states that the operating doc SAW on the KUB the am of my surgery that my kidney was swollen. No one said a word to US about it though.
I just don't know. All this trouble b/c I have spongey kidneys?
So I don't go until Tuesday, the pain is getting worse, and the tenderness of the kidney is overwhelming. I didn't think much could keep my mind off my RSD foot in this weather, but this kidney stone is scaring me to death.
It's been there well over a month now, survived litho, and is damaging my kidney. Yet I'm caught up in the web of crap that is my life. My doc goes on vacation the day after we find this is still stuck and causing trouble, then the Ultrasound suddenly has rules, and I'm worried I won't last the weekend.
I've had worse pain when the stone is moving and with my RSD, but I've never been this scared (not since I was in labor with the baby who died.) I don't even know what to look for or worry about. To top it off, I can't get that look on my Urologist's face out of my mind- the one that said, "Wow, how is that still there and how will we proceed?" Her look scared me. But she's on vacation. I'm in bed laying on a heating pad sideways, praying that my kidney doesn't shut down and that we get the darned litho machine. My ordering the bothersome Ultrasound with its rules instead of another CAT scan, we're wasting time.
Sorry- I'm ranting b/c I'm scared. Really scared.
The doc who did the last litho was NOT my urologist. We had to drive a half hour away just to get on the list. I WAS on the top of the list in case someone cancelled, and that is how I got in.
But now I'm waiting for the ultrasound on Tuesday. Then my doc will call in for the results, and decide what to do. She KNOWS I don't want any other option than another litho b/c I have an irritable bladder. The other 2 surgeries require a stent. I can't even tolerate a catheter! The stent, as I've heard from many laser litho patients, is the worst part of the whole thing. I had shock wave litho and that doesn't require a stent or a hospital stay or invasive surgery.
So I'm laying here, nauseous ad worried. My Urologist is a nice lady, but when I told her how worried I was for the weeks I waited, she was surprised! I was honest and told her it was among the worst months of my life. She said, "The worst? Really?" She was truly surprised. NOW I'm even MORE worried and the pain in my right side scares me. I'm on morphine for my RSD foot as usual, but of course, there's extra pain. Breathing deep hurts, I get nauseous easily, and as mentioned, I can't wear a bra which is crazy. The pressure on my right kidney area is too much.
So I wait and pray. I just don't know why the timing is always so off. 1st, I get the stone a few days before Xmas, and the surgery schedule is off b/c of Xmas week and NY week. THEN I find out it's still there, one DAY before my doc goes on vacation? What's next- I get a stone every holiday? Sorry- I'm even more upset today. I can't bend, twist, do housework or play with my son. My RSD is at a very bad stage and I just want this stone thing over. But AFTER the stone does get litho, then I worry about seeing this renal doctor to discuss this disease I have. I just can't win.
Again, I apologize. I am trying to think positive. :) Thank-you.
