Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

So today was VA cardio day. We call it that because no matter where you think you are supposed to be, you get sent to the far side of the hospital only to be sent right back to where you started. Today it was a cardio day because they have moved the valet parking to the far side of the hospital complex. It actually takes going through several different buildings to get into the main hospital!!! they do offer a golf cart ride to the main entrance, but Mr Toad's Wild Ride at Disney land was tame compared to that!
Anyway, the day had not started well with me being upset about way too many things. The worse one was a fear that I would have to drive myself. Hubby put an end to that thought and even stopped at Target for me to get a new battery for my TENS unit so I could use it on the drive. As he was still running a 102 fever (not contagious), I just got out of the SUV and caped Misha when we got to Target. The man who was in the next parking spot offered me one of the store's powered scooter.
I have been fighting to stay on my feet and out of wheelchairs and scooters since I first screwed up my knee while in the Army 20 years ago. I looked at that scooter and all I saw was how much energy I would not have to exert by walking and how much pain that would save me. After getting a quick lesson on how to ride it, I got the stuff I needed with almost no pain or energy expended. I thought about that all the way to the hospital... for the first time I am willing to give up walking. Hubby and I talked that a motorized wheelchair or scooter would give me a lot more freedom of movement. Six months ago I filed a complaint against a teacher who said I should just use a wheelchair. Now I am thinking of getting one...
so that put me in just wonderful frame of mind for Seattle traffic which got us to the hospital with all of six minutes to cover over a quarter of a mile - I was late even though we left with an extra 45 minutes of slack time. We looked for wheelchair to borrow, but none were available without a wait.
So then we are sitting in a room with the chronic pain specialist. She wants to know how I'm doing - and I flat tell her lousy. I am down to less than 30 minutes a day where I can be active and I live from one dose of hydrocodone to the next. It is my WHOLE life.
Then she spends the next 20 minutes or so trying to get me to say what I have in my life that gives me hope. No, I have no hope. I have pain. That is my life. Do something so I don't hurt 24/7 to the point I can walk more than 10 feet without being in agony, and I will find some hope. She points out that I have a great hubby, don't I want to go to dinner and a movie with him. I patted his knee and flat told her we go to movies all the time. I get to watch the first 15 minutes or so and the rest is lost to pure agony. She did not like my horses - but only my psych doctor does. They are my only hope, my only release.
Then she goes on about how I am only in my 40s and I want to be put on long term, long acting pain meds. Yes, yes I do. About half way through her discussion on the evils of opiates, I interrupted her that opiates don't do crap for me and I want to try something else.
That actually got a reaction. She asked me how I slept, to which I responded that I don't. Prompted to explain, I told her I take my pain meds, wait an hour for them to kick in before I can fall asleep, then wake up when they are out of my system... about three hours later. Rinse and repeat two or three times per day.
I still have my hydrocodone, but as of tonight I am starting Gabapentin. 300mg at night for three days, then add 300mg in the am, and three days after that another 300mg in the middle of the day for a temp total of 900mg a day. Recheck in two weeks to see if I need to go up or down with the dose.
All in all, it sucked, but at least I have something other than opiates for my pain. IF this helps, then I will look for hope.

Ah gabapentin. Yep I was happy to start that a month ago because it's not an opiate and thought if it helped my pain I could decrease my other pain meds & go with the gabapentin. My first dose was 5/22. Well no one mentioned that if I skipped a dose for a day or three-Im on 3x300mg too spread out during the day-I would start feeling like I couldn't hold my head up. Day 2 was weird trembling internally like shivering in my neck & shoulders but not visibly. Just thought I was having weird spasms. By day 3 I was having brain zaps & uncontrollable full blown tremors all over. My legs wouldn't hold me up to walk. I honestly thought I was either having a stroke or rapid onset parkinsons or just losing my mind. Hubby freaked out too & almost took me to the ER. I had taken at least one dose those 3 days but missed the other two for whatever reason and wasnt too worried about it. But I never went a full 24hrs without a dose. Stupid on my part for missing any at all. Lesson learned the hard way. Finally figured out that was the only change I had made that week & looked it up online. Sure enough that's what withdrawal from gaba can be like. It scared the hell out of me. I've only been on it 6wks. It took two days at the full dosage to get back to normal.
I'm having the Dr wean me off at my next appt. I can't take something that will do that to me if I just miss a dose. I'll stick with my schedule II narcotics thank you very much. The withdrawal from those is a walk in the park compared to gaba. I've stopped almost every kind of med cold turkey from pain meds to steroids (I don't recommend that to anybody) and Ive never had such a visceral reaction to a med before. OMG I had know idea I could get so dependent so soon. Dr keeps wanting to increase dose because most people take 3-4x what I'm taking. I can't even imagine what my withdrawal would be like at that dosage!
Disclaimer**I'm usually weird regarding side effects. If there's a weird one or a rare one I will probably get it. It doesn't mean you or anyone else will. It's a great nerve pain drug for a lot of people. I just had a horrible experience and it's not the drug for me. It's cousin Lyrica and I didn't like each other either. Strangely I went cold turkey from that after about 6wks & had no withdrawal issues.
I only mentioned my weekend adventure not to scare you or to keep you from taking it butto say that just because its not a narcotic opioid or controlled substance doesn't make it harmless or even necessarily better for the mind/body. Gabapentin along with tramadol seem to be the go to drugs for a lot of docs now since they're non-narcotic and they don't have a problem prescribing them. But I just wanted to let people know that isn't necessarily the case.
I hope you feel better & the gaba lowers your pain levels. In conjunction with my pain meds & anti-inflammatory it did help my back pain a bit. It may help you sleep at night too. It can definitely make you drowsy.
Take care,
Emerald
I wanted something that was not an opiate as I can take 60mg of morphine and though my balance gets wacky, I still HURT.
I have had meds before that if I was as much as 15 minutes late taking my dose I would withdrawal symptoms. That was the Caraspodol that I was jerked off of cold turkey earlier this year. It worked great, but there was NO being late with a dose.
I got a good 15 minute lecture that this will be hard to come off of - but if it gets me out of pain, at least for a while, I am fine with that. Thank you so much about letting me know just how serious it can get if I miss a dose!!! I needed that information!
BUT I slept for the first time last night in years... and I woke up only at about a 5 pain level.. I usually figure functionality is at 7. I am afraid to move for fear that it will hurt. Hopefully this trend will continue. I have a light day scheduled... a movie with Hubby and some light packing.

First time my mother got on one of those stores scooters-she ran into a pole in the store ..told us how things were going to be :p
They do have motorized scooters which come apart-so they can be loaded into a trunk..called go-go elite I believe.
Don't knock those motorized carts! I have to use them all the time and I've become quite adept at driving them. In fact, I've almost indulged in "aisle rage!" I also had a MVA INDOORS at Trader Joe's a few months back. Seriously, they are a God-send. I wish more places offered them.
Anyways, good luck with the Gaba and hopefully sweet dreams!
