A smile in the face of pain and suffering is a way to hold others at arms length and keep them out of our lives. It says to the world, I am fine. Dont come too close. It leads to break downs and hostile angry outbursts.
When you smile through the pain, no one is able to offer you any assistance. The committed Christian is denied a chance to offer you help and fulfill their witness of kindness. The Boy Scout is denied the chance to offer compassionate assistance. Strangers in a store are denied an opportunity to allow the suffering person to step in front at the cashier. Being in pain and suffering are opportunities to show the world true heroism of allowing others to help make things better. Accepting help from others can only be accomplished when we are honest. No one has a perfect life because this present earth is not our final resting place. Life is meant to be lived to learn how to live with others in concert. Then when we reach our final resting place we know how to share honestly and openly with others. The reason some are in pain and others are not can not be discovered on this side of life. But running from it all the time is not going to help us learn the lessons that pain and suffering are presenting.
