Nerve Block

I had a Dr. appt today to go over my MRI that was take a few days ago. Short history, I had a discectomy in Oct 09 for a herniated disc, and have been in pain ever since. Been on pain meds and done numerous other things including PT, Chiro, accupuncture, epidural injections and nothing has helped.

My MRI does not show any reherniation, but the 2/10 MRI with contrast showed a tear in my disc. This new Dr. was very compassionate and I was totally taken a back by it. I have always had Dr.'s that I guess have had so many patients come to them that they just don't have it in them any more to show understanding and compasion. Its all very stand offish and technical when I have seen the other Dr.

Anyway, he is recommending as a dianostic tool for me to have a nerve block done on the 12th. He states it is like rebooting my nerve and that after that we can discuss what other options there are. I am told that my leg will be completely numb/paralyzed for about 6 hours.

Has anyone had a nerve block? What was your experience?

That is such a blessing that you found a dr. that is compassionate and that you really like and is taking good care of you. I have not had a nerve block in my back, but what are they going to do for the tear in your disk? Aren't they going to put you into some kind of back brace to try and heal it? I pray that things go well for you and the nerve block helps!

Time was suppose to make things better, but now its been almost 2 years and no luck. I was in a back brace for several months after my sugery in 09. And just plan time and "being careful" was suppose to give my disc time to heal. Non-stop pain is all that has happened. This is the 3rd Dr. I have seen and it seems a fusion is going to be the last thing they have to offer. We shall see after the 12th.

Had a nerve block in 06' in my cervical, it did wonders for me. Unfortunatly "that" Dr. is over 2000 miles away today. He gained my trust and really not wanting anybody else to do the 2nd one w/o his recommendation. It wasn't painful and took a relatively short time to work. Best wishes with this and if you do get one I hope it works "just half" as well as mine did. You'll be singing 'praises" to God in no time.Did not have any "numbness anywhere".......... prayers/hugs, Vicky

Great you found a dr that makes you feel so comfortable how could you not when he shows you such compassion.

I had a nerve block yrs ago, but it didn't work for me. I know that they help many people, I would ask him though how often you have to do this. Usually this isn't a one time only procedure.

Nerve blocks on the whole do not hurt. They numb the area that they are doing. You can have some pain afterwards for a few days, but then hopefully it brings you great relief!
