Lyrica now generic

FYI - - For anyone on the Board that is taking Lyrica (or would like to be able to), it is now available as a generic for nerve pain. Just today I bought pregabalin at Costco, 90 days, 150 mg twice a day for a total cost of $29.51. A huge savings! The FDA approved nine manufacturers to make pregabalin if I remember correctly.


BTW, if you are facing high prescription prices for generic drugs, be sure to check the prices at your local Costco. They often beat the crap out of standard drug stores prices, even lower than my Part D copays. If you do not have a Costco nearby consider moving you will save money in the long run LOL.

To sptrout-I was given generic lyrica for the first time on 9-17-19. I had a terrible reaction to it. I tried it the next day, and it was the same awful reaction if not worse. I contacted the pharmacy-they wouldn't switch it out, nor would ins. over-ride the payment, even though the doctor sent over another rx with DAW!!
My experience with generics this whole year has been rough. There are better, and worse generics, some don't work at all. Good luck to you. What was your experience with generic lyrica? Thanks, Fibrohyg

I agree 100% that different generics are not the same, and not identical to the brand as the FDA likes to preach. In my case, I could not tell any difference. The next time, who knows?

The FDA approved several manufacturers (nine I think) to produce their own versions of Lyrica. I know that it is a risk, but any chance of taking a chance on another manufacturer?

Naturally, cost and insurance are the two big players. Will you be stuck with 100% of the cost of the brand? That would be a bid hit on the pocket.

Funny, but one of my doctors refuses to take anything other than brand medications himself. He told me that he has seen too many bad reactions with his patients switching from a brand to a generic. Sadly, he knows that his patients gave no choice in most cases due to cost and insurance.

Thanks for your reply. I can pick up the lyrica brand name on 10-17-19, so I just need to lay low for 8 days since this one makes me so dizzy and sore. That is true though about ins. I am hoping my ins will keep covering the brand, that may change in the future. I may need to get off this drug entirely if that is the case, and the withdrawals are awful. Good luck to you Fibrohyg

Pharmacies cannot take medications back after they leave the pharmacy. It is a matter of safety.

If a new prescription for a brand is written shortly after a prescription for the genetic was filled. Insurance might pay for it IF the dosage is different than the generic.
