It does sound a little different. Maybe your doctor is from a culture that is open with affection. You know how in Italy men will kiss men when they greet one another. Or remember the guy that used to host Family Fued. He was kissing everybody( females ).

Hahaha! Excuse me for laughing (I literally laughed out loud when I read the original post!) but, yes, that is....different! But in all honesty, I actually think I like it :) Keep in mind I am a really touchy/feely person and I'm a huge proponent of affection and love and all that good stuff, but I totally understand that some people are much more reserved and this certainly is an interesting thing for a doctor to do! I respect those of you that would feel uncomfortable with this whole situation, but in my humble opinion it seems like your doctor only had good intentions by making a move like this.

I give your doctor an "A" for effort...assuming the effort was to connect with patients on a more personal level -- opposed to the typical doctor/patient relationship. And I'm thinking this was just (a very unusual) attempt at comforting everyone before their procedures....but oh my goodness, this is definitely a new approach that I've never heard of up until right now!

Weellll...I've had 30+ surgeries and not one Surgeon/Dr. has every kissed me in pre-op. And if any man did, I'd probably knock the crap out of him...I'm not a "strange man touching me kind of person."

Did you ask him what the deal was? I guess he could have just been having a really good day...but still.

You didn't smell alcohol on his breath, right? No red funky "pot" eyes??? He was sober right?? LOL

I have gotten a few pats on the arm. I think at one point that was supposed to be healing. These days professionals are afraid to touch anyone. They might be sued or arrested.

Depending on his heritage, it may be a custom in his culture. Or maybe that is his way of saying "good luck, you are not alone".

My last lumpectomy, the doctor found out that I was alone. She held my hand until they put me to sleep. And then made sure I was emotionally OK before they called a ride to take me home.

A kiss is strange, but it is not done out of malice.

Thank you all for your opinions. He is white american. I was a bit uncomfortable with it. Just never had it happen or heard of it before. He did not look high or smell of alcohol lol. I just hope it was with best intentions & not a type of pass or something.Thanks again.

I wouldn't want it- would tell him so- and he's a fool to do it, very easily misconstrued even if he means well.

I don't like people coming up and touching me at the best of times but now when it hurts it's annoying! One lady I really like but she always slaps me on the back- meant affectionately- and it's painful.

Don't like professionals to bring up religion either. My gp dr told me to check out churches for counseling, I wasn't impressed!

I assume the patient is awake? Then they could say "No". I would tell him ahead of time, no smooches on the forehead. That may be a way of giving patients "Good luck" but a handshake will do. Definitely unethical IMO.

I thought of the cultural thing too...but if it's not that, then I have "red flag alert". and you mentioned that gut feeling....yeah me too. A little kindness in the world we live in is nice....but kissing foreheads in the prep surgical area IMO is out of line. Were any of these patients still sedated if it was a surgical prep area?? That stood out to me too. I was assaulted in a storeroom at my job many years ago, and it was a kindly looking employee that went around to all the women and touched their legs....at first it seemed an innocent mistake...but the behavior continued and increased....none of the women would go to the boss, they were afraid for their jobs, not enough proof....until he put his hands on me and I blew up, and all the predator crap he was doing was exposed....and he had been doing it elsewhere too for years...ugh!! Maybe this is TMI....but I would be saying "No touching please" at the very least....and I would see what his response to setting that boundary is.....that can be very telling if he has been doing it elsewhere and getting away with it.

My first thought was if it makes you uncomfortable tell him so. To me it lacks professionalism big time and I'd have no problem telling him I was uncomfortable. Just strange!
