Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

I don't know how many of you have had this surgery on the kidney, but I'm starting to worry. I had the procedure yesterday morning, woke in excruciating pain and was given meds in recovery. The main med that helps pass stones (for ME anyway) is Toradol. It's non-narcotic but it beats any opiod out there for stone pain. They were giving me fentanyl IV but didn't have a scrip to give me toradol. They had a scrip for me to FILL for it but not IV like when I had huge stones passing in ER.
I had one tablet in my pill box for emergencies, and I knew if we were going to get out of there and avoid the "maybe she should stay in hospital" discussion, I'd have to take it. I got approval and took it. Half an hour later, I asked them to remove the IV.
I was told I'd likely sleep a lot, to drink 2 quarts of water a day and that blood in the urine was normal. My urologist got TWO of the big stones in my right kidney and she had thought only one would go. But b/c of that good news, I'm really in a lot of pain. I'm passing the remnants of 2 huge stones. My right side is so painful that it stretches from my upper back to the depths of my lower back. I'm on Flomax to help pass these tiny stones, and toradol, plus the morphine i take already for RSD. To still feel such pain is astounding to me.
I'm not supposed to be alarmed at blood in the urine but that comes and goes. I'm supposed to strain the urine which is a HUGE pain in the butt. All I see are little black flakes and wonder how long this will take. I was given a jar to save the remnants or any whole stones, but all I see are flakes.
I slept the better part of 24 hours after the surgery and woke at 2pm. Yet I am exhausted! I'm so tired. My back aches from the stones and the constant laying about. I feel weird from taking my meds as often as allowed but am still in pain. My CP doc said to call if I need anything stronger but he's closed Fridays-Sundays. Not sure how much more of this I should take. My stones are notoriously slow. I don't know WTH to expect, or if the little black flakes are enough?
She blasted 2 VERY large stones so the idea was that I'd pass more than black flakes. She also told my DH that there are about 10 suspect, too-large stones in each kidney, in addition to countless smaller ones. I can't imagine going through this again. Why do kidney stones hurt so much? And knowing this, why didn't they keep me in hospital? (Other than the fact that I would not, in a million years, stay overnight unless my life was at stake.)
Sorry- my head is spinning and I'm trying to figure this out. My 4 year old son keeps saying "I Miss your hugs!" and doesn't get why I can hurt so much but have no owies he can see. Nausea and pain aside, I just wish I could get comfy on my side. I'm so used to sleeping on my right side.
I'm so glad I didn't have this done when it was freezing out! My RSD flaring would NOT have helped this. The foot hurts but isn't as bad as it was a few weeks ago.
I know, this too, shall pass. But WHEN?

Can you identify these rom-coms from just a screenshot from the middle of the films? This is a multiple choice quiz so even if you're not entirely sure you can always take a guess and at least have a 25% chance of getting it right anyway, so why not have a go?! https://www.buzzfeed.com/alysaurus688/rom-com-screenshot-trivia-quiz

I signed a contract with my pain doc. & never broke it. He's got a message on his office service saying to go to ER when office hours are closed. Those docs are serious about making sure we follow our contracts to the letter. We must check out scrips before we leave & if there's trouble, go to ER. If a dr is on call he or she cannot change meds over phone. It's first time I'd need a change but I'm trying the emergency extra half pill. & hoping it will help the toradol work.
I'm also taking another hot bath (3rd bath since 3pm!) and drinking loads of water. If the stones don't move or those tiny fragments are stuck somewhere I will call urologist & she can admit me or offer advice. I can take meds she prescribes in the ER or hospital but can't take opioids home . That's fine as I have enough to take the dreaded extra half MSIR but I still wish I could let PM doc know that this us happening. I got permission 2 years ago. & have only done it like 4 times but I feel like I need to tell him I had to do it again. It's silly bc if it works, I know he'd be relieved. And if not, only the urology do can help & only by admitting me which I do not want .
Bill- I didn't know you were having kidney lithotripsy! I thought you had a stone in your ureter lithotripsied . I wonder why you got a stent but I didn't? Stents are no fun but they protect us from this exact problem. With a stent your fragments and gravel go right through without bad ureter contractions. If you've had the ureter litho and are planning for the kidney one, good luck! I've heard from other ppl and nurses that the kidney one is worse . But if you get a stent it'll be easier.
Frankly, none of this is remotely easy & I'm feeling kinda like I was lied to by the doc. She did say it'd be a rough few days after & that they used to hospitalize ppl who had this done. She's s sweet lady who never judged me for the RSD & I insisted she be the 1 to do it as they trade off days amongst the urologists.
I don't know. I'm tired, sore , grumpy & in serious pain. Who knows what's going to happen ? I just know that I've been able to tough it out so many times before! I feel I failed by taking that emergency half of msir. I know that was the plan but I hate not being able to tell my cp dr that I had to do it. And really for no reason bc I have enough meds for an emergency.
Per usual I am overthinking it !
Thanks everyone! I should have update in 12 hours or so and I'm hoping I just sleep it off. I'm imagining all the worst things that can happen bc I'm strongly phobic.
Hope you all have great pain free days & please forgive any typos as I'm doing this on my IPhone for 1st time!
Thanks!
Jen
I have no personal experience to offer. My daughter could not handle the pain of the stents and they had to remove those almost immediately. All I know from helping her is that keeping the fluid going was the biggest help in flushing out the stones. (include jello, ice pops, broth, juices, etc) If you start vomiting from the pain, give it up and go to the hospital for the pain.
Praying for you and sending lots of positive energy your way. Please keep us up to date as you can. Rest-Rest-Rest.

You have to remember to that you just had surgery so I'm sure from moving stuff sround in there, you're in a lot of pain and being on the O.R. table, especially with your back already doesn't help things.
Like I said I know nothing about stones, but I pray every day gets easier.
Love and hugs,
Xoxoxoxo,

I guess i just thought that it'd be over by now. I had this done Thursday. I am passing small black coffee grounds like stuff, and small black pieces. My last 2 kidney stones were opposite- one was completely black and round and one stone was clearish white and had pointy peaks. My doctor said it was normal to have different colored stones. They both tested as calcium oxilate.
I just don't know what I'm supposed to put in the sealed cup b/c everything is too small to catch. And I have no been drinking as much as i should've which i why I am awake and pushing fluids like crazy.
My son sees the X on my back and says, "BAD doctor to hurt Mommy!" which is sweet but I'm too tired to figure out how to make him get it.
Maybe I'll pass fragments tonight. I'm drinking apple/grape juice and water and the toradol is saving me. I know it is a dangerous drug but there's no WAY I'd get through a stone w/o it. And yes, I know I'm not supposed to take it more than 5 days. I'm being careful and ONLY taking it when it's unbearable. I went 11 hours w/o needing one, then all of a sudden I woke with severe pain.
I'm just...I just a BAD patient to start with so having this last longer is killing me. I'll be glad when it gets better or I see a doctor. I'm not cut out for this stuff. I just pray it's over soon.
thaliajen, PLEASE, ask your doctor about getting some. You are right. Toradol is like a wonder drug. Just dangerous to overuse.
I've started passing small fragments, mostly tiny black stones and a few white ones. She said she got TWO of my stones so I'm guessing, like last time I passed them, she got one dark one and one light one.
I'll ask about the nasal spray but admit I'm not great with putting stuff in my nose, ears or under my tongue. I'm hoping the fragments will quit hurting me soon and I can forget about it. I'm honestly very serious about NOT having this done again. I know that there are lots more to deal with but this is costing a fortune in babysitting and it hurts too much.
Thanks for the info- I'll be sure to ask at my next appt.
Considering I had the surgery on Thursday morning, I'm just happy they're finally showing up. My DH thinks they're too big- he expected grains of sand- but at least now I can catch them in the strainer. And it sure explains the pain I've been having. 2 of them are not much smaller than average kidney stones, and resemble the ones I've passed over the years.
That said, I know there's many more to come as the stones she targeted were huge. It's scary to know there's much more to come. Then again, she DID say give it about 5 days before you do anything. She said I wouldn't be up to much at all until Tuesday, and she was pretty spot on. It's Sunday and I am exhausted and in pain. Just doing a load of laundry (REALLY dumb idea!) made me shaky and hurt like hell. I guess that's why it says "no bending or lifting" on the instructions.
Thank God for the meds and the fact that it is a weekend. My DH is watching our son and if need be, I'll get a sitter for Monday. Hopefully it'll all be passed by then. I like to think I can handle my son for a few hours before school Monday, but then again I am fatigued and still passing fragments. I guess we shall see.
