If you haven't read my novel-length post about my 7.5mm kidney stone, I'll give you the short version. I was taken to ER in throes of worst pain ever. I had another kidney stone, this one 7.5mm- too large to pass. As always, I told ER staff about my CP doc and our pain contract b/c even though it feels like death, you don't want to break a rule that could ruin your life.
The docs took no time in administering Dilaudid, as they did with my previous 2 surgeries. I had given them the exact timing of my doses of MSContin and MSIR b/c I keep that info on my iPhone. And even though I'd JUST taken a MSIR tablet an hour prior, they still gave me IV Dulaudid ASAP. It never works for my kidney stones- they need Torradol for that. That's non-narcotic, a strong, strong anti-inflammatory, and is amazingly helpful for kidney stone pain. But it can only be taken for 5 days.
It just occurred to me that they gave me this same Dilaudid after my last kidney stone surgery. It'd been decided that I take the morphine dose as usual before surgery, as with previous surgeries.
So how is it that I was able to take both opiods? Is it b/c I have taken the same dose of morpine for 17 years? Am I just that tolerant? And the Dilaudid didn't make me dizzy or sick, it just burned when it went into the dreaded IV.
Now with my surgery coming up, I'm quite curious as to how I could be given Dilaudid while already on morphine. I am sure there's a valid reason- the ER docs knew what I had taken at exactly what time. My Pain doc is out of the office until next week, and if I have to go into the emergency Stent surgery (not likely as I'm terrified of stents & surgeries) I just want to know that no one is making a mistake.
When I had surgery years ago I had been given IV Demerol. I was told it was different and wouldn't interact badly with the morphine. Is this Dilaudid similar? I'm don't WANT extra pain during surgery, but I also don't want to worry. Any ideas?

Dilaudid is a derivative of morphine..but..mlg for mlg.. Dilaudid is stronger.
Ask your phatmacist?

The link below gives a good description and history of the drug. Funny, Dilaudid was invented in Germany in the 1920's, but even though the generic is commonly used, there still is a brand version available for some reason. BTW- - When prescribed, the doctor usually writes "Dilaudid", but the bottle you take home will always say "hydromorphone."

The docs said NOT to worry about it, that they wouldn't overdose me, and were amused that I was so worried. I kept asking for the non-opiod Torradol b/c it's the main med for kidney stone pain. It is a strong anti-inflammatory and I'm telling you, it beats Dilaudid and Morphine by a long shot for stone pain.
I'm also shocked that the docs said it was okay to take the morphine when I got home, so soon after IV Dilaudid. You're right in that I'm highly tolerant, but how do I protect myself when I have stones? Just b/ I don't FEEL the drug doesn't mean it isn't possible to overdose.
Maybe they thought all the vomiting was bringing up the oral morphine?
