Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

I am a chronic pain patient with very bad disease in my spine for 10 yrs now. My spine has been seriously diseased for 30 years. When ever I go to an emergency room, no matter the hospital, I am treated with covert & overt behaviors, questions, and attitudes which presume I am there for drugs to become intoxicated.
I have experienced this dismissal of my real pain, real injuries, real illnesses, & emergency life threatening experiences.
I am expressing this now because, even though the attitude at this visit was minimal compared to some of the abuse from the medical community I have endured before, it was still obvious to me that all of the medical professionals who treated me on this particular visit were behaving with the same overt/covert assumption I was just there for pain medication.
I could hear them speaking of it outside my room. I was asked strange questions like, " what is this small scab on my wrist?" ( I assume it could have looked like a needle mark)
I am a sober alcoholic for 22 years now, however was never an I.V. user nor addicted to any drugs. Because this honesty is in my records I am treated with absolute abusive reactions, behaviors, statements, & dismissed & abandoned when I am in real severe pain, & even life threatening situations.
The pain I am treated for on a regular daily basis is obvious & medically proven with several M.R.I.'s throughout a 30 year length of time. ( Chronic for 10 years now.)
I have a real problem with the way the American Medical community is treating people with severe chronic pain. I have my own & other peoples horror stories which would turn any sane & empathetic human's stomach sour.
It is acceptable to treat terminal patients with chronic pain for their comfort & last days of quality of life. Yet... it is not acceptable to treat people such as myself who must continue to live day after day, year after year, decade after decade, so that we may live with some small percentage of comfort from our pain, and possibly experience a very small percentage of quality of the life we used to enjoy.
I am attempting to write this simply because in the last decade of severe, worsening daily pain, I have been abused by the very persons I am suppose to be able to go to for help with my health which effects my quality of life experience.
The supposed, " War on Drugs," & the process our country & even some Doctors have agreed upon as a solution to the problems we are encountering with drug abuse, & illegalities involved have some very good points of action.
However; the majority of what has been the result of this, "War on Drugs," & the procedures put in place to attempt to resolve the unnecessary deaths from over dose of legally prescribed pain medications has done just about nothing.
Good Doctors & deserving patients are being persecuted with no reason. The bad Doctors & not deserving patients are still getting their medications to sell on the streets or get intoxicated with.
The real results of most of the procedures and new policies put in place for a solution have made the whole medical community insanely frightened to diagnose, trust, & treat their patients for fear of being persecuted by fake patients with false medical records.
And Me, the thousands of people like me, are abused in the worst way possible. We wouldn't allow our dogs, cats, or pets of any kind live with the kind of pain we allow our fellow human beings experience every minute of every day for years & years without end.
The 2nd atrocity, which I find to be very emotionally & mentally abandoning & abusive is the fact that one of the most sacred relationships of humanity, the relationship between Doctor & Patient has been compromised to the point where neither Doctor nor Patient can be completely honest with each other because of the severe consequences of doing so.
I cannot tell my doctor my pain medication is not working properly or well enough without my doctor having to wonder if I am telling him/her the truth. I cannot hear from my doctor everything going through his/her mind about solutions or possible diagnosis because he/she cannot be completely honest with me.
The consequences of this problem are not being felt by the people causing the problems, only by us the innocent people who are stuck in the middle of it all.
No other country in this world treats their medical patients nor medical professionals in this way. I know of American citizens leaving our country to find the proper medical care for themselves or their loved ones.
For God's Sake... This is America. The most powerful, & humanitarian embracing country in the world, unless you are experiencing an illness resulting in extreme, severe chronic pain, or you have no insurance to pay for your life threatening illness.
It is simple to find out who is taking their medication as prescribed, or who is not. There are tests which show these results. There are so many ways to resolve this problem without abusing and allowing people to suffer unnecessarily. Teach more than 1 hour in 8 years of education on the topic of pain, chronic pain, pain medications, safety, education for patients as well as the doctors.
This is not finished yet, but I am working on it. Any suggestions? Topics? Feelings? Your personal experiences?
I must finally put myself out there & be vulnerable so at least some voices will be heard thru my voice. I can no longer cower like an abused animal in the corner being dismissed ans abused by under treated pain.

You have done an awesome job of stating all of the above. It was well written and I enjoyed reading it. You shared alot of great points and quite honestly, I cannot think of anything to add since you already did such a thorough job, but if I think of anything, I'll be sure to let you know!
Hugs,

Hope your feeling good. Hugs & prayers
It's a shame CPers have to put up with so much abuse. It's pitiful.

I have the ER doctors snidely telling me that I was over medicated. That I need to sleep it off. I had slurred voice when I talked and couldn't keep away. I had sleept for almost two days already and I didn't know why. They kept after me about where and what time had I been drinking.
This went on and on. I was able to get anything to drink not even ice chips. They took my blood. I was so angry, I told them they would not find high does of meds. They did not nothing for eight hours except wait in the ER in bed by myself being belittled because in stead of treating me like a patient the looked at my med sheet and diagnosised me from that and I had been damned the minute it was read.
I am glad by the grace of God, I was alright and went home and slept another day. I really don't want to hand over my med sheet when I go to the hospital. I hate the thought of going to the Er because I feel like I could have been dying and they would have just left me in the ER room I might have just have died and they would said I OD'ed.
It scareds me. I will fight not to go to the hospital cause I don't feel safe there.
2 months ago i had to see a different dr (new resident). it was spring and the buses are cold, so i had on long sleeves. he made up a flimsy excuse to look at my arms. that was just one piece of the horrible experience beside getting lectured about my meds...
on sunday, they had put my private prayer request on the bulletin, so the guy who gives me a ride (even though i use a cane) said oh, i didn't know you had back problems. yes, i have an old football injury that really hurts my knee.
point being, new dr's aren't trained at all and i don't have the energy to educate them, but i told my dr. i would move to a different office if i ever had to see that guy again.
and the same for people at large, i know this 80ish guy thought he was identifying, but i just said yeah, that can really hurt...in the 5 minute ride i wasn't going to tell him that that's a flea bite compared to some of my days.
i do send things to family, but they still don't get it...the misinformation on the TV has 10x more weight than anything i say.
sorry so long, but i know we all have 100's of these experiences day after day. not giving up hope though.
They are selfish people who deserve our pity and being put in jail where they can no longer harm others.
The is blame on the way doctors are trained also. It is a marathon race to the piece of paper that says they are qualified. ONly the strong survive. That is not the BEST but the STRONG!
So explain to me how someone who can stay up three days and nights and still think well enough to treat an ER patient could have any understanding AT ALL about being to tired to want to live?
CP patients are a puzzle that takes a lot of understanding and cooperation between services and in a lot of hospitals the services are pitted against each other by the suits who are upstairs crunching numbers.
i know this sounds cynical and i won't stop trying but several of us have worked on that side and seen it in action before we were in this position.
It is absolutely UNFAIR ... UNFAIR ... when a patient feels that they are doing the "right thing" by answering certain questions HONESTLY only to have that information judged by people that don't even know you! Its like trusting people to be professional and non judgmental and what you thought was right -- only backfires on you and you can't erase it because its basically written in stone! That makes me ANGRY! People shouldn't be punished for trying to co -operate about their health and history.
This happens to people and IMO ... if a question doesn't pertain directly to my situation at hand----- its none of their business...I was fortunate enough to see around the corner because another that went before me-- they were basically fooled into thinking that some of the questions were to help and were to be taken at face value because they trusted that they had no other motives in asking such personal questions.
when you're in the patient spot you are like a school child. we aren't rewarded for being honest. it's so frustrating trying to figure out how to deal with an unknown set of rules and to get the treatment we need.
i've said that i feel like alice down the rabbit hole in a world with bizarre rules i just can't figure out no matter how i try.
I stay away as much as possible! Hate them! They're not there to really help people in pain! My dog gets better care from the vet.
Seems like it's a constant uphill battle to get understanding and QUALITY treatment:(:(
I, myself, have grown quite weary of trying to educate others about my own conditions......seems everyone has a "bum knee" or "bum back" and knows what life with CP is like:(:(
I'm ever so sorry everyone has had to and still does, have to go through this BS!!!!!!
