A few weeks ago, I asked what would happen if I went to the hospital from an accident say and was in extreme pain, would they give me narcotic painkillers. knowing I am a recovering addict!
That must have been a premonition because I had my answer last night. After walking 4 miles, I slipped on the ice at home and landed on my back. Having no insurance wasn't to crazing about going but had no feeling in my right arm so ambulance guys and first responders talked me into it. On the way to the hospital, I felt EVERY single pot hole on the roads! I would scream in pain with every bounce. They didn't want to give me anything for pain so doctors could evaluate me.
At the hospital they checked their puters and saw I had been there for abuse. Again, nothing for pain. Not even an ibprofen. I was shaking with pain and my heart rate was through the roof. This is the price I had to pay for my past abuse!
I have since regained feeling in my right arm but have constant pricking and stabbing pains in both arms! The ER doc wanted me to follow up in two days. Whats the sense? It will costs my a couple hundred and I will be in as much after my visit as before! Think I'll stay home!

I was recently separated from my wife of 33 years and it's complicated. Anyway I rented a room about 15 minutes away and I see my kids about once a week. I see the people who own the house I live in once in a while but other than that I stay in my room where I do my cooking, wash dishes in the shower, read, color, and sleep. I get out at least once a day. I grocery shop and I attend 2 meetings...
It seems to me that while they needed you "sober" to review your symptoms and make sure that you were ok...they could have provided for your comfort after that and given you something to take home.
I am sorr that this happened to you and sorry that you fell.

I think I will be tough and just grin and bear it for now. Benn taking 800 mgs ibprofen every 4 hours. Helps a little maybe but nerve pain sucks! ahh well makes me want to do all I can to be safer now.
i'm so sorry about this. i'm curious, is there possibly another ER you could go to next time? i'm sure you would have if there was, but maybe the ambulance had to take you to the closest one, i'm not sure...
i'm curious: did you ask them for anything? did they say anything to you after they checked their computers, address why they weren't helping your pain - giving you an opening to discuss the situation with them? i'm not trying to be nosy, i'm just wondering how it was handled, on both ends, really.
either way, i hope that your pain lessens soon, and that should anything like this happen again in the future that you'll be treated more humanely.

My PM Doc has a very strict policy, and he does it to CHA (cover his arse). Every patient signs a medication contract that states that we will not accept pain medications from ANYONE including ER's, the only way that this is OK, is when the patient is unconsious, other than that NO.
He does random UA's, and at every visit, you need to bring your bottle of medication for the nurse to do a count. Maybe this sounds too much for some, but with the atmosphere that we have in Broward county, Fla. he needs to it to keep his license and to make sure that no one sells, or do something with their pills.
So no matter what, you deserve pain relief, and I am sorry that this happened to you. Hugs,
And yes there are non opiods out there that they could have prescribed you. I also know addicts that have had accidents and the dr in er made the decision to give them low dose pain relievers so they could have some relief!

I was actually afraid to ask more then a few times. I didn't want them to think I was a sissy for some reason. Maybe I just wanted to punish myself for my past abuse as well, not really sure.
It was a horrible nite but getting better.
