Frustrated and venting

For the last month I have been suffering with a pain on my foot. Went to ER, they wrapped it. 4 days later went to ortho who without taking any additional X-rays put a boot on my foot, claiming it was not a stress fracture but a nerve issue. For the last three weeks I have been suffering with that boot. I kept taking the boot off due to the pain, but then my foot would hurt more. Last week when I saw this doc he said he was referring me to a specialist that I saw yesterday. Guess what? He took additional X-rays and saw the break. Now the stress fracture progressed to a break. I also told the doc that my foot was beginning to hurt to the left of my initial area. He informed me that it is possible that the third metatarsal could have a fracture as well. So 12 days before Christmas and 5 days before CHANUKAH I have my foot in a cast. If the orig doc had put me in a cast I would be almost done. Now I have to wear this thing for another 4-6 weeks.
I guess I am not only frustrated but depressed too. The crutches are very hard to work with. I have no upper body strength due to my neck.
I just don't know what to do. I feel totally isolated.

wow I am sorry that they found out there is a break in foot....that sucks...casts suck....anyway hugs bill

I'm still in the boot, but I wouldn't let them put me in a cast because I'm moving. My sister broke her fibula and she bought some kind of roller thing where she could put the knee of the casted leg on a pad and push herself around. I was thinking of asking her to send it to me, but I seem to be able to walk around without crutches if I'm in the boot. Sorry about your foot. Casts are a hassle especially if the rest of your body has problems. I have weakness in my left leg so when I lift my left leg with the boo to walk upstairst, I feel like I'm moving a lead leg.

When I broke my right leg, I got a wheelchair to use in my house, but I had wood floors and it did help quite a bit.

I hope you will be quickly on the mend now you are in the cast.

annny I saw a guy with one of those rolling things the other day when I had my MRI at the ortho offices....it had a steering wheel and you just kneel on it and push with other foot....he was scooting and allowing it to roll a long distance...LOL

I can highly recommend the knee scooter! I broke my foot in October and crutches are difficult and painful. I rented my knee scooter from a local pharmacy that rents medical equipment for $55 a month.

Jasmine, I really sympathize with you. The urgent care dept doc said mine was a bad sprain and gave me a boot as well. I begged for an ex ray so they humored me and yeah, it was broken in 3 places. They traded my boot for a cast and I had to keep weight off it for 3 weeks, then I got the boot back. If they offer physical therapy, take it.

It will take a while to heal, and you might think you'll be in the boot forever, but it WILL get better eventually. But the timing with the holidays really sucks.

When you posted about this before, i kind of thought it was broken.
The problem with foot fractures sometimes is that you can't see them.
The person who actually takes an Xray also contributes to it .
When Xrays are taken, the images are superimposed on each other and can hide the tiny fracture lines.
This time they took another xray and can probably see it because of many contributing factors.
I hope you will heal soon and heal fast. Usually it takes 6-8 weeks for union and then it heals for about another year.
The pain will go away much sooner than the healing occurs.

That knee scooter sounds really neat. I hope you are able to attain one and make your life a little less stressful! That doctor that shined you on and didn't bother to take additional x rays is a real unprofessional doctor. Actually, he sounds just plain lazy! Hugs GB

Thank you all for your support. The knee thing does sound cool. I also thought of a wheelchair. Idk. I am undecided. I saw this young girl in the doctors office sailing along with her crutches. I felt like such a spaz. Seriously I couldn't believe how fast she was going and then the reality of her being about 16 hit me. I most certainly not 16. Lol. Thanks again I truly appreciate all of you.

When I had a broken leg i had a rolling office chair and a rolling stool in the house. Sometimes i also used a walker - i had a PICC line and could not use crutches.
Most of the time i just told myself " i m lucky they saved my leg, i m lucky i have a leg " lol

Thanks Aronia. The biggest problem I have right now is where the cast meets the shinbone. It is horribly bruised. I tried sticking a sock in there which helped some. Then I asked my bf to try some foam. What a difference. It hurts some but not nearly as much as it did. I took it out last nite to let the skin breathe. I will put it back on later. Take care.

My favorite for that is sheepskin. But sometimes they put casts on improperly, so if you are having alot of pain in an area you shouldn't, you may have to go back and be re-casted. A friend of mine got huge sores from a cast that was put on too tightly.

I am going to second the thought that casts should not be bruising you. They itch like crazy as the skin cannot get rid of the dead skin with a good washing, but other than that it should not have any pressure points.

Same comment here about the cast being uncomfortable. As the swelling went down in my foot, my cast got too big and was practically useless, and it was painful. I got my foot "re-casted" with a new, smaller one and it made such a huge difference.

If you think you might get a knee scooter and you get a new cast, tell the tech who works on it your plans, and he/she will build up the front of the cast more. You'll be placing weight on the shin of the broken foot on the padded seat of the scooter. Good luck, and I hope you heal quickly.

Thanks guys. I will be seeing the doc in two weeks rather than four to check my progress. Unfortunately it is Christmas time and the doctors take a lot of time off. One of my issues is taking low dose baby aspirin. It thins my skin and causes me to bruise easily. So right now my leg is swollen and I have been trying to keep it elevated.
