Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...

This was not done arthroscopy as yours will not be. It takes quite a bit out of you. Depending on how long you stay in the hospital you'll be expected to start physical therapy pretty quick. I was in the hospital for 4 days.
In your case the ball of your femur does not fit snuggly into the socket, because the socket is not formed correctly and its too shallow. So, they'll be cutting bone out of your socket to make a snug fit for the femur ball. I won't lie its very painful and if you've been taking narcotics regularly for an extended amount of time, its best it you work with your Dr. to taper off as much as you can. Trying to get pain control when your body is used to daily narcotics is a nightmare....people complain all the time about "mean nurses and Dr.'s" who won't give them more meds after surgery....the reality is they can only give you so much, before they kill you. So the more you can get off and get your brain/body out of being used to the narcotics, the easier pain control will be.
Its a good idea to talk to your Dr. about what his plan for Post-Op pain control will be. I'd also request a meeting with the Anesthesiologist for the same reason, for Pre-Op stress/Anxiety and Post-Op pain.
The recovery can be pretty slow, it takes a while to get back after a major bone surgery like this...bone pain is about the most painful there is, so be diligent about the Pain Plan. You do not want to leave that hospital without appropriate pain control. Make sure you have someone at home with you 24/7 you won't be able to get around and do much for awhile. I rented a Recliner chair when I had mine because I knew I wouldn't be able to sleep in my bed, with the Recliner I could sleep pretty much laying down but be a bit inclined and able to prop my knee up as needed.
When you start Physical Therapy, its always easiest if you take your Pain med about 15 - 30 min. before your appt. Physical Therapy is hard and painful, getting a head start on the pain control will be a major thing. They will make you do the PT early, with these types of surgeries, mobility can be lost rather easily, the longer you just lay without moving or walking, the easier it is for the muscles/tendons/joints to freeze up.
Okay, sorry for the book....if you have any questions, you can PM me.
