I usually find that not much is funnier than reality. This is a story that my parents used to tell as I was too young at the time to remember.
Location, Mission Hills, CA - part of the LA sprawl, but far enough on the outskirts that we had horses in the back yard of our 1/4 acre lot.
One night, our next door neighbor walked in on a burglary in progress. The man, not wanting to be caught, ran out the back door of the house. What he did not expect was the two 100+ lbs German Sheppards in the back yard who did not like strangers. The dogs got a few good chunks out of his clothing and his bag of loot before he managed to climb the six foot chainlink fence into our back yard.
Now, we were not home at the time, but a description of the yard is necessary. The horse paddocks were against the back fence and the area between the horse paddocks and the house where those big steel jungle gyms - the ones that were set in the ground with cement. My mother, being the frugal woman she was, had clothesines strung between the play structures for drying clothes.
The burglar, as he ran across our back yard, no doubt to the sound of our guard dogs in the side yard found that our back yard was not unguarded. Christmas and Thanksgiving, the Canadian Snow Geese patrolled the area with pure hatred in their hearts for human beings - probably because they were destined for aforementioned dinners for which they were named.
Now we know that the geese got a good hold of the man shortly after coming over the fence from the scraps of cloth on the ground. Being attacked by the geese must have sent him sprinting for the closest fence on the far side of the yard... but remember the clothes lines? There were at about neck height for the average adult... He hit them with enough force that he bent, let me say that again, he bent the six inch pipe steel posts of the jungle gyms! More scraps of fabric, with blood on them were found at that point.
At the far side of our backyard, a shoe was found. The geese must have gotten one last attack in before he fled to what he thought was freedom... but in actuality was a pair of guard donkeys in the next yard. Luckily for the burglar, the people in the first house had called the cops and they rescued his unconscious form from the donkeys who were intent on killing him.
Funny, but in the next six years not one person on our block was robbed.
