Chronic Pain Support Group
Physicians and professionalsdefine pain as chronic if it lasts longer than three to six months and is persistent. It's distinct from acute pain that is a direct result of injury or trauma. This support group is dedicated to those suffering from chronic pain. Discuss treatments that have worked for you, find advice for your specific experience, and find support. You're not...
I've had them for years, starting in my early 20's. I don't go to the ER b/c I'm severely needle phobic. I mean, it has to be BAD for me to get one, and even then I'm a basket case. And IVs scare me even more. When I was a tiny girl I saw a rerun of "Quincy" where a man killed a hospital patient by putting air in the IV. So when I had my tonsils out at 15, I called the nurses in every few minutes until they literally sedated me! I was quaking with fear, and truly thought I was going to die.
Years later I had a breast reduction. I was much too young and since pregnancy changes your chest, I should've waited, but my back and shoulders couldn't handle the pressure. I went through the same thing with the IV. I BEGGED the dr to take it out even though he said I needed the IV pain relief. Finally he took it out and put me on Darvocet, and he was shocked that I didn't complain. Hell, I was thrilled b/c I could stand a bit of pain but I couldn't sleep with the IV b/c I was terrified of it.
When I got my 1st kidney stone they hospitalized me. I remember very little other than throwing up a lot and begging them to take the IV out. Over the years I've had many, and the last one was 14 (not 16 as I wrote) years ago. I went in for some nausea relief and they gave me a drug I was allergic to- compazine. I had a reaction where I screamed, passed out, saw black, thought I was dying, and came to with the doctor all upset b/c I'd had a severe allergic reaction. He made me promise to get a bracelet with my allergy on it.
Since the RSD, that is the only time I did the hospital thing for stones. I don't need the pain relief, or at least I didn't back then b/c I was on a bit higher dose of morphine & was allowed to increase if needed. So now I just drink water and suffer at home. It's more comfortable and I'm not staring at an IV line all night and day.
I will watch for infection and can call my doc for antibiotics, though this time of year he usually requires an office visit and I'm not up to that. Last time I had a stone it passed and then I had another one! it was a "fragment" of the 1st one and not fun at all. I needed antibiotics with that one. Let's hope this one is a teeny tiny grain of sand. It hasn't moved in almost an hour so it is time for more water. Ugh.
My first one, abt.5 yrs ago lodged in my urethra and the uro doc took in out in the office. Only took a few mins. but the pain was horrible!! Then, offered me pain shot. WTF!!
I've had many small ones since then and one surgery for another large one. The darn thing evidently passed the night before the surgery and they didn't bother to check. So surgery for nothing!!!
I hate these things!
I hope your stone passes quickly...now drink some more water...think about how much better that is than having an IV...
Good luck and I hope you pass them quickly!!
I don't know if I would go to the ER or not if I had another one. Now, that I know a little more about them. I just hope I never get another one!
I hope your agony is over soon.
(((Hugs)))
Hope it passes soon.
@ Nealy the same thing happened to me. I had one stuck went for surgery and it was already gone. But that's when I got diagnosed with IC and hell hath no fury on a bladder fully inflammed passing kidney stones too.
Healing hugs & prayers
I passed something at about 3am, but it was like a bigger grain of sand. I think this is like the last stone I had and I'm either passing 2, or I passed a fragment of the 1st one. So I'm STILL passing it.
I admit that part is my fault as I fell asleep, therefore stopped drinking water. But I'm up and drinking water and it's moving along, and I'm literally crying into my pillow b/c the sitter forgot to put my son's fan on in his room. (We use fans in our bedrooms for white noise.)
The sitter is returning at 8am and then I'll try to sleep again. I just am so tired! I have a cold on top of all of this so it isn't fun. But I'm praying the rest passes before 2pm, when the sitter has to leave. And I HATE that I can't be with my son, but I can't chase a 2 year old around right now. I have to get to work and pass this thing. I wish he wasn't such a light sleeper- I just want to go kiss his cheek. But no sense causing more work. It's not as if he is going anywhere.
Okay, back to my bottles of water!
Good Luck!
