Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) describes a sense of exhaustion and post-exertion malaise, even when you have gotten enough rest and sleep. The disease is characterized by six months of incapacitating fatigue experienced as profound exhaustion and extremely poor stamina, and problems with concentration and short-term memory. My story is that I've been suffering from this for about 30 years now. I was one of the lucky ones, getting my diagnosis within a couple of years of the onset of symptoms - after having been labelled a hypochondriac by one doctor and sent to therapy for depression by another. He thought the depression was causing the fatigue, but the psychologist informed me that it was the other way around.
The main thing I want to stress to you is - don't push yourself. It took me years to learn that and in the process I made my condition a lot worse. Trying to push through the fatigue will trigger a flaring of the condition which we refer to as a crash. Many of us have gone through the crash and recover cycle. Each time I did it, I recovered a little less than the previous time, leading to an overall worsening of my condition.
As for the doctor, depending where you live, there are people on the site who might be able recommend a good one in your area.
As sorry as I am that you've had to reach out to us, welcome to the site and know that we are all here to listen and support you.
Right now my head feels more clear than it has been lately but my body is killing me! I'm achy all over. I feel like I'm getting stabbed repeatedly in my back / sides and my limbs feel like jelly.
I'm trying not to push myself but I need to work right now to support myself. And I feel like staying with this job ( no matter how strenuous it is) will be easier than searching for a new one.
I just found a website that list some doctors who are familiar with CFS / ME in my area. I'm going to see my neurologist on Monday and then if that doesn't work out I'll make an appointment with a new doctor.
I really appreciate the both of you sharing your stories and listening to mine. I'm just so frustrated. I just turned 22 this year and figured out what I want to major in and now this happened
My neurologist made me feel the same way! He asked my age and made me feel like a little kid who doesn't know how to handle stress. He was all "you're 22, you're in college, it's life!"
