Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) describes a sense of exhaustion and post-exertion malaise, even when you have gotten enough rest and sleep. The disease is characterized by six months of incapacitating fatigue experienced as profound exhaustion and extremely poor stamina, and problems with concentration and short-term memory. The cause is unknown, but it is a...
I've had a sore throat every day of the eight years I've had CFS!!! I kid you not!
I wake up with a sore, scratchy throat every day. By evening it's gone. It doesn't hurt bad enough for me to complain about, so I don't.
In the beginning of my illness (when everything was scaring me to death) I got myself tested for step two different times, just to be sure. Those tests were negative. It's a sore throat, period!
All I do for it is to drink decaf. green tea when I wake up. It's very soothing to my throat. I also eat soft cereal, such as oatmeal in the morning. In other words, I don't do anything or eat anything that would tend to cause a scratchy throat.
I would suppose that you could suck on a cough drop or lozenge that would ease the discomfort, if you feel this all day long!! Especially if it keeps you awake at night. There are things like Chloraseptic (sp.?) that you can spray in your throat to numb it!!
I'd speak to my doctor about it and see what he recommends. Most likely, with no infection present, there isn't any medication for a sore throat that lasts all day! Like a lot of our symptoms, we just have to find a way around the inconvenience and discomfort. Wish I knew of more to tell you about it. Just make sure you don't really have a throat infection, before you decide that it's a CFS symptom and nothing else!! We do tend to be our own doctors and we really shouldn't do that.
We bad!! Hope this helps, art girl!!
Also, check and see if you are dehydrated. Perhaps you are drinking less as the day goes on and that is not helping. If you pinch the skin on the back of your hand it should bounce back immediately. If it doesn't its one of the signs of dehydration. I never knew this til recently but if you are thirsty you are already "down a quart" as they say. Keeping a thermal mug of whatever liquid works for you near the bed is nice. I go through 20 oz from sleep to wake just when I roll over and drink some for my dry mouth/throat.
I took your advice and tried pinching a few things on this 65 year old body! Absolutely nothing bounced back.
Very sad. It is what it is.
I'll keep drinkin!! xoxo : )
1. Try a ColdEeze. It's a cough drop with zinc in it. If it doesn't work you can just save it for the next time you get a cold. Taking it at the first sign of a cold makes the cold go away faster. I like the honey lemon flavor. It takes a long time. I like taking mine as I get into the shower.
2. Get a Brita - or something else to filter water. I once got a severe sore throat from tap water. Consider the possibility that may be making your sore throat worse. Brita is the cheapest way I know of to filter your water. It's a pitcher you add water to.
3. Adjust temperature in the room you sleep in. Try turning the heat off and using blankets. If that doesn't make a difference try the other way, 65-70 degrees, nice and warm but not too hot.
4. Warm liquids soothe a sore throat. I remember a music teacher telling everyone no cold liquids if your throat gets sore.
5. And...I love Outshine lemonade popsicles when my throat hurts. Temporarily the pain goes. It's by Dreyer and has more fruit than most popsicles.
6. My recipe for soothing a sore throat. This began as a family recipe, but I improved it.
Put grapefruit juice in a mug. If you don't use microwaves than use a saucepan and pour in a mug when done. (This messes with a lot of medications. A good substitute is lemonade, but for some reason grapefruit works best.)
Heat juice. Get the temp you like for when you drink hot liquids.
Put in a mint tea packet. As in steep in juice instead of hot water. Yes it has to be mint, make sure it has no tea leaves, just mint leaves - any kind of mint.
Add honey to taste. Honey makes a difference so add at least a little.
Drink and enjoy. I think holding the mug so you breathe in some of the vapors helps.
Aloe vera liquid, an ounce mixed with 8 oz of whatever you're drinking, 3 times a day. (This also cured my grandmother's arthritis within a month, and she was bedridden with it!)
Melaleuca sells something that helps you get over any virus quicker, also helps boost immune system. Its a little packet of powder u mix with 6oz of water. Tastes like Tang breakfast drink. Its called Activate C Immune Complex. They also have Sustain, which is great to keep you hydrated and replace the good stuff you use by sweating, illness, etc.
My husband n I find that when we snore we wake up with a sore throat also.
Chicken soup (the broth) helps me better than most anything.
And guess what... Needed rest critically after last night's activities. But when my husband's alarm clock came on at 3:40 A.M. I kissed his forehead and it just about burned my lips. Yep. Sore throat, he can barely talk. No work for him today! And no rest for me. I'll have to get him to the doctor or urgent care ASAP. He's one of those people who's never ever sick, but when he is, he's sicker than most people get. He does it up right.
