Hi all
I recently posted a discussion about the heavy chest feeling being anxiety/stress related or just another fatigue symptom.
Anyway I was pretty sure it was the illness making me less tolerant of everyday stress until it just happened out of the blue a few hours ago when nothing was going on.
Then I remembered that I just stopped taking liqourice late last week.
I have been in consultation with a friend who has had ME/CFS for 25 years and knows more than any person/Dr I have spoken to.
Anyway her suggestion was that I should start taking melatonin for sleeping and that this feeling maybe adrenal fatigue and that perhaps I need adrenal replacement therapy.
It would make sense seeing as I have gotten worse without the liqourice.
Does anyone out there take things for adrenal fatigue and melatonin for sleeping and do they work?
I have had ME/CFS for over a year yet it is only now that I am having problems sleeping.
Just when you think you have a handle and knowledge on your symptoms, more come along just to keep you on your toes!!

I was diagnosed last year with adrenal fatigue. I believe it is a blood test to check your level. I take DHEA daily and I do notice a boost of energy. The other important factor is hormones. Depending upon your age, this can be another huge factor. My physician monitors my hormone levels from blood tests along with how I am feeling. I have been on bio-identical hormone topical cream for about 3 years. Again, I do notice an improvement in energy and sleep with the cream. I take melatonin and magnesium at bedtime. Again, with an improvement. I was diagnosed with CFS/ME 14 years ago. I do believe my CFS is better controlled since being on the DHEA and bio-identical hormone cream. Your friend has given you some good advice.

That sounds like a good idea. I have never been tested for adrenal fatigue (you would think my doctor would have advised it) but i'm taking the bull by the horns and i'll ask for a test. There has got to be a treatment that will make me feel SOME energy during the day. Right now, there's NO energy - just a slight boost from caffeine that doesn't last very long. Want to get away from the caffeine and start using something good for my body.

Also, I found out I had sleep apnea six years ago, and sleep with a CPAP machine. At least I dream now...i had actually stopped dreaming and couldn't stay asleep. I am amazed at how easy it was to use the CPAP.

Hey, I just thought I would let you know that when I saw my physician today (and he is great) he suggested I take DHEA 7 at bedtime. He just came back from a conference about hormones and the effects on the body. Professors are doing research at Columbia, US, on the imbalance of hormones and the link to multiple diseases. So, I'm changing to the DHEA 7 tonight. That's good that you are treating your sleep apnea. My Dad loves his CPAP. Hang in there.

Ruby - I've taken a lot of things over the years for adrenals - to build them up - licorice, adrenal glandular, pregnenolone plus bio-identical DHEA & progesterone. One thing a lot of Docs miss is phosphatidyl serine. This is a supplement for calming down the adrenals when they are in a hyper state, like at night, thus helps with sleep. Phos. serine also supports neurotransmitters in the brain, so really helped me with brain fog. Seriphos is another type of phos. serine supplement which also calms the body/brain. It's less expensive.
