Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Support Group
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) describes a sense of exhaustion and post-exertion malaise, even when you have gotten enough rest and sleep. The disease is characterized by six months of incapacitating fatigue experienced as profound exhaustion and extremely poor stamina, and problems with concentration and short-term memory. The cause is unknown, but it is a...
I think it's a symptom of CFS, a type of fatigue of the lungs. When I had it I was actually living in a very mouldy flat and I think that had something to do with it. I didn't realise that the mould was affecting me at the time. Once I moved out it went. The other thing that helped was to get lots of rest and to rest my voice. I've never had it again, so it can go and isn't permanent necessarily.
I also think it's some kind of neurological dysfunction from our illness. Just reading the descriptions here is making it happen a little for me. I think we feel like we can't get enough air, so we start to panic...which is, after all, a normal reaction to that feeling.
It is a vicious circle like Lupin said. You have to break the circle with distraction or something to relax. I have beat it at times by getting angry...I tell myself that I'm not going to let this crazy thing ruin my evening/afternoon. It mostly happens to me at night.
Seems as though if we flood our brains with some other emotion like anger, the anxiety is less. Sometimes you can control it by sheer will power if you catch it right at the beginning. Just say to yourself..."This is an illusion and I'm really OK."...and repeat for as long as it takes to convince yourself.
I'm always more stable mentally in the daytime. It's the nights when I get really depressed, anxious, and panicky.
I also used to be very sensitive to my mouth and nose covered. I'm not as bad now but I used to be near panic at basic stuff like scarves, kissing, and I couldn't hide under blankets without a breathing hole.
